Call Me Picky
I'm I being too picky to wonder why the M4 has quad exhaust pipes but only one muffler?
I'd think that a car costing close to 80k w/just a few options and sales tax would at least have dual mufflers. If there's a good reason for having only one muffler please explain. |

the e46, e92 and f8x have all had one muffler. for that matter, the MPE for the e9x also was a single muffler design.
not sure, but doesn't matter to me personally. probably the easiest design to create the sound and fitment they want.

I want 4 mufflers someone find the room under that rear end dammit JK
But seriously, why does that upset you. The sound and performance out of my e92 M is pretty damn good. It breathes and exhausts well for me

Is there any benefit two mufflers would have over one? Do you mean two in series or in parallel? Considering how the radius of a cylinder affects the resistance to flow (8Ln/pi(r)^4) a single larger diameter cylinder will allow larger flow than two smaller cylinders. So BMW is probably justified in having one larger rather than two small mufflers.

I have no idea how much the quad outlet mufflers weigh, but wouldn't putting two mufflers instead of the one be heavier?
Also, the extra y-piping that it would take to run the dual mufflers will surely be heavier. |

Yes, he\she's picky... not a bad thing
Lottsa of m3 owners are. Just depends what we're picky about. For example: Plenty of e9x m owners hated how much the stock muffler hung down when viewed from the rear. OP: One of the benefits of aftermarket... as long as you're prepared to pay the ///mTax

back in the day i did a lot of reading on exhaust flow, back pressure, and how it affects power bands and throttle response etc..
To cut to the chase: having two mufflers does not always equate to more power, having larger diameter exhaust piping does not always equate to more power (but on FI applications bigger usually was better), incorporating an x-pipe in the exhaust flow usually resulted in a more desirable power band.. You're not picky, you're simply unaware. |

2 mufflers. Sounds better, looks better, 1/2 the weight. And of course, not always the case. I couldn't care less about it being 1 or 2 mufflers but for me the related factors had me choose a 2 muffler design; on my E46 and E92 M3s. The E46 was based on sound and the E92 was a combo of weight and sound. The much cleaner look was a substantial bonus on the E92.
