Pinewood Derby M3

My son wanted to make a copy of my Jerez sedan for his pinewood derby car this year. We used a dremel to carve the details and a mix of blue and black to try to get the color right. The car won the first heat with a speed of 165 mph. The next three heats we slowed and ended up in the top third. I am not sure but I think one of the wheels got misaligned after the first round.

I just wanted to share a picture of how it turned out since I thought you guys might appreciate it.

Sorry but with those tints you would get pulled over constantly in NJ. Guess you're out of state. Car looks AWESOME!

Brings back some good times. I had fun with my sons doing this. They say you can tell if the car was done by the son or the dad. I don't think there's any Pinewood Derby car done 100% by the son, unless maybe he's a Weblos II.

Cheers.

Did you refill with graphite? It makes a HUGE difference, but it usually lasts a few races.

Maybe next year a full carbon fiber wrap

I polished the axels and packed as much graphite as I could in around the wheel. It seems like that stuff goes everywhere except where you want it.

I don't think most dads would let their eight year old loose on a band saw. We took turns with the dremel and sanding. He did most of the paint but I did the lacquer because that stuff is nasty.

I wish the car was as fast in scale form as it is in real life. My son was bummed he didn't place in the top three but there is always next year.

Another tip: When I was a kid we would shave down the wheels to reduce the drag.
