I don't get it...Why do so many forum members love Porsches so much?

I've driven quite a few of them, and even a fully prepped and caged 911 GT car on the track at a pretty good pace... to me the 911 still has the engine in the wrong place and handles poorly compared to a F/R or M/R layout.

FYI I do love the handling of the boxster/cayman, but both are underpowered and linked to "girls cars" IMO.

I'm not looking to be flamed, but I just don't get why people worship 911's so much. To me its just okay, but the next logical step up in a car would be a Ferrari, not a 911.... just sayin'

PS - yes, look at the avatar, I am a little tainted since I side with Clarkson, but the man does call it like it is...

I don't know why members love E93s. They are missing the roof, weigh more, and handle poorly compared to the E90 and E92. I won't quote the 911's racing history, but it's history beats the piss out of the M3's. I definitely consider the 911 a couple steps up from the M3, and I look forward to owning one in the future.

I think Porsche are nice cars but my next car after an M is definately a Ferrari, if i could afford it. But for the price the M is the best pratical car in my opinion.

I'm sorry but you have not idea what in the hell you're talking about.

911s handle like they're on rails, trust me the engine is in the right place.

I don't particularly like the styling, I think the Boxster, Cayman, Panamera and the new Cayenne are some of the ugliest cars in the world. But a 911 is a 911.

Not many cars can play with a 911 Turbo on a track, on a street, or anywhere for that matter.

100% agree. OP is calling the Boxster/Caymen "girlie cars" when the E93 is kinda girlie itself, not to mention 400+ lbs heavier than the E90/E92.

The 911 is a classic, whether you like it or not.

Not only could I agree less but do you know how much ferraris cost? How is that logically the next step financially?

I think one main reason Porsches are considered over F-Cars and Lambo's is because of the cost. Porsches can be had for m3 price + a few grand more, not 3 or 4 m3's more...

I think much of the reason Porsche receives such universal praise on this board for several reasons.

1. accomplished racing heritage
2. everyday useability - unlike Ferrari (or other exotics), which are almost always pampered by their owners and frequently plagued with problems due to a lack of use, Porsche's are made to be driven hard and put away wet, day in and day out.
3. quality - I can tell you from experience that while you don't get many creature comforts for the price they charge, the build quality of their cars is beyond reproach; they're always listed as one of the most reliable auto brands.

also, the Porsche 911 is the epitome of sports cars. the M3, by comparison, is not a true sports car. the 911 has been praised for so many years due to its practicality relative to other sports cars - i.e. it's a sports car made to be used every day. they're extremely reliable, have at least a semblance of a back seat, and are just as at home commuting in traffic as they are spending a weekend at the track.

I think you also find a lot of 911 GT3 fans here because the philosophy behind the GT3 is very much aligned with that of the traditional M division (i.e. high revving, rear-drive, tightly wound suspension, etc.). There are always trade-offs between track-orientation and daily-drivability, and the GT3 is obviously further toward the former end of the continuum than the M3, which aims for a more virtuous balance between daily-drivability and track-orientation.

How reliable is a 911 compared to our M3? I also have an older E36 M3 with almost 200k miles and I've had to replace everything on it.

I have been researching Porsches latley too. I want one one day. Funny in the last few weeks I have been reading about snap oversteer and the 911 design. I don't think you can outright igonore what the OP is saying. It makes sense that a engine in the back can act like a Pendulum around a corner if you're not careful. Is that not why the 911 GT2 was nick named the widow maker? Being a novice, with no stabilty control (996 GT3) and the weight in the back can be a recipe for disaster.

Uhhhh, yeah, sure...
There are plenty of cars between the M3 and Ferrari.
Corvettes, Caddys, Mercedes, Jags, and even Mustangs (Boss 302) to name just a few.
As well as selective Porsches...GT3, GT2, Turbo.

You are hilarious, ok if you imagine that your ugly car have reached the m3:s class leading performence but for god sake dont say it is a level above. I dont get why other brands car owners keep coming here. The mustang and some other cars are competitors to the m3, not an level above.

I know that people in this forum like to throw in the 911 and the GT3 into the same type of car, the truth is that many many people will own 911s but few will own GT3s. But then again, in this forum, the step up for the nicest 3 series BMW is a Ferrari...I honestly know nothing.
