DCT 2010 v 2008

My 2008 DCT is with the local dealer getting some work done and over the past 2 days they gave me a demo 2010 DCT with 1500 miles on the clock to drive. What came to light was that the 2010 version is a far better car to drive in S4 & S5.
My car even in warm dry conditions you have to be extremely careful in S5 when changing gear with WOT. The gear change is so severe and neck snapping that it can and often does adversely affect the stability of the car. S5 in the 2010 was like S2 in my car but with the rev matching on the down shift.
IMO the 2010 version had the perfect set up and have asked the dealer to check the 2010 has a different version of software installed as mine was only just updated in January 2010. Waiting on their feedback.

Interesting, how many miles on your car? I think the latest DCT software was actually post January. I believe it was late winter or early spring timeframe. I did not get the previous few updates but the latest seems to be very good - I just had it installed yesterday.

There is a service bulletin about this. Talk to your dealer. The shifts can be softened in S5 & S6. When i take my car in for service in a few weeks I'll have installed into mine. I hate the brutal shifts...reminds me of my 2004 E46 M3 with SMG.

You don't happen to know the number of the bulletin? Asked the local dealer and was met with a blank stare...

Could it be a degradation over time? What's the estimated life of the clutches in the DCT?

Seems to me like clutch wear would tend to make his car shift less aggressively though, not moreso like he seems to be observing.

It would be great if you could come up with more information about this service bulletin!

Thanks

They are designed to last the lifetime of the car.

how is that possible? a normal manual needs a clutch every 30-50k miles and this is a high-performance car

I just got the update since I had the rear lights changed to the new LED. I haven't had any problems with the car and it was one of the first off the line.

It's more like the lifetime of the transmission. Replaced my E36 tranny earlier this year. Said the same thing about that transmission.

The clutch in my E46 (6MT) lasted the entire 125k miles I owned it for. Granted, the car still had plenty of life left, but I don't think 30k-50k would be the norm for a car that was not abused.

I am curious - how many miles on the E36 transmission? Was that MT or "SMG I" (not that it matters too much - same transmission for both I believe)?

dont alot of people mention slippage with their DCT's once over around 45k miles.... So that would tell me that the DCT has a relative lifespan and would need to be replaced at some point down the line.

45k miles?1 Sounds a bit on the low side (unless gross abuse takes place consistently) but I don't know.

I haven't read any such sattements from DCT owners, actualy I didn't think there are a lot of people with 45k miles already. If handy can you please post any relevant links as I am very interested to read user feedback on the DCT after considerable usage.

We hear a lot of reviews about the 1st service and how happy people are when the car is brand new, but I haven't seen any reviews after significant milage has been accumulated...

I am particularly interested to hear how the DCT has behaved

wouldn't slippage require only a clutch replacement?

What are you smoking?

Oh, yeah.

I have 48k miles on mine with no slippage. As much as I hate this transmission, I do not know of a single case of clutch failure. That doesn't mean it isn't in the cards for BMW's lifetime fill transmission (lifetime of the transmission, not the car).
