Cool BMW Z4 35i (JB3) vs Porsche 911 Carrera

Hi guys, I just want to get something of my chest...

PORSCHE 911 DUDE YOU GOT SMOKED!!!! MUWAHAHAAAA

Ok ill explain.... Today I saw a dude in a Porsche 911 carrera (latest model 345bhp) driving on the motor way. I passed him, and thought, maybe if I wait he'll race me. He looked at me, I looked at him, we both were thinking the same thing... LETS RACE!!!

We had a 4 lane motor way, both doing 75 km/h, high revs. 1 beep 2 beeps, on the 3rd beep GOOOO. I was a little slow with my reaction, so he moved half a car a head... then the all mighty BMW turbo's kicked in, and my Z4 instantly took the lead. Up to 240km/h the Z4 kept on pulling away. Then he braked (the F A G)...

Never saw him again... he was probably to embarrassed to face the fact that his almost double priced car was slower

I wasn't running a standard Z4 35i. I have JB3 installed (version 1.4 map 5). This truly makes a huge difference in the 100 to 200km/h acceleration. Ive had this setup for about 2 weeks now, and the ECU is fully used to my car. I do not have the dual cone intakes installed atm because I think they actually slowed down my car...

awesome - and yes, dual cones do slow you down (but sound good) because they suck in HOT engine air

Just goes to show its not size that matters but how you use it.

You should install a video camera in your car.

Dual cones really slow you down ? Do we have any user that managed to prove this ? Because they guarantee an increase in bhp/torque on the BMS website, and I was about to order them next week for the upcomming car.

I would like to see you get away from a Carrera in the twisties. Also, how do you know he had the pedal to the metal?

Oh I know, the Z4 will be hopeless on a track against that Porsche. And I'm sure he was flooring it, because I could see his face in disbelieve when I was pulling ahead.

That Porsche is only 345bhp, and I'm sure my Z4 is producing over 360bhp with JB3 installed.

godius, didn't you have your car chassis dyno'd after you installed the JB3? I'm curious what your new torque (tq) rating is.

His flywheel tq is 288 ft lb, so even though his weight was better by -330 to -419 lbs (w/ or w/o PDK), I'm thinking that would be not significant at a starting speed of 75 mph. Your superior tq would make the difference.

Not any more. The dual clutch transmission more than makes up for the weight disadvantage of about 300 lbs. 2010 911 0-60 is mid 4's, 2009 Z4 35i with 300 HP is mid 4's. Add the extra 60+/- HP and it is no surprise he beat the 911. The 911S would be more of a match for the 35i with the added HP.

right on as to torque

as for the dual cones, I am sure on a dyno with the hood OPEN or before the engine really warmed up you would see an increase; but close the hood and get the engine nice and hot - no way

+1 re the dual cones

I saw a raging debate either here on the 3 series side about the cones, but I just don't buy it for daily use, especially in the southernish climate of So Cal and likewise. You can fry eggs in the engine bay on an average day just driving around, not to mention freeway gridloc or stop light cruising. Air density drops like a rock under those conditions.

It's an unfortunate fact that lot of the crap we put on our cars may look or sound great, but really doesn't improve performance and in many cases is detrimental. I've bought a lot of old classic cars as fixer uppers over the years and the biggest headache I have is reversing all the add-on and take-away crap the years have done to them.

I know the question wasn't directed at me, but I recon the z4 JB3 can beat the m3 on a straight... havent been able to test that though.

Sorry, I don't own a Z4, rather a 335i But hmm i haven't test it yet! Although it wouldn't be fair to run it against a E93 M3

youtube has plenty of those JB3 E92s VS Stock M3 videos

Cheers!

If you're rich enough maybe you can fly Dinan and his crew out to Bahrain so he could tune your bimmer, but other than that, you don't have much choice because it's only offered in North America. Mainly the US and very few locations in Canada have dealers or shops that can install the tune.

Great goodies, I would pay a fortune to see the face of that Porsche's driver being smoked.

+1 on the double cone, when the engine is hot, it will slow u down, as the density of the air become thinner...
