Exclamation I want to cry!!

This morning I was on the freeway and a truck dropped black top rocks all over the road!!! I was going about 70 when my car was pelted with rocks. It was unreal. the rocks were all about 1/2" in diameter if not bigger. the road went about a mile covored in rocks! When I first started getting hit I was behind a van. So I passed everyone so that I wouldn't be getting hit, but it was too late the damage was done.

Damage Report:
about 6-7 large pits in windshield
tar marks all over my hood.
deep hits into the bumber. (shows black behind the paint)
Broken right kidney grille (I just bought the damn thing about 2 weeks ago)

What should I do? I called CHP and they said all we can do is see if anyone got his plates and called in and they would be liable for the damages. I gave them my number and they said they would call me.

ouch that sucks... well to make you feel better, i just did a 1000 mile drive to philadelphia and back, i got a couple of rock nicks on my windshield... none of them deep enough to need fixing but they're obvious when you look at my windshield.

but yes, it sounds like your damage is much worse... i say dont bother fixing the damages that arent serious unless you find the people responsible... stuff like this happens all the time.

Since you have a police report, call your insurance company and file it as comprehensive damage, and you pay your deductible.

Pay up front and fix your car first, and have your insurance company deal with the truck company.

Comprehensive claim will not increase your premium.

Once the trucking company, claims responsibility, you won't need to go through your insurance, you will need to use theres!

I dont know why everyone is telling you to go through yours,,,,

But then again if you have a police report stating that it was the truck's fault you might as well claim it under "No-FAULT" clause and get your car fixed.

However, if I were you, I wont rush things and wait for the trucking company's response to this matter.

good luck to you...

Good point.

If the OP is willing wait it out and deal with the truck company, its insurance company, and possibly defense lawyers on his own, he has every right to do so.

Many of us don't want the hassle of dealing with this matter on our own time, and wish to go through our own insurance company and get the car fixed ASAP instead.

You SHOULD have followed the truck and got his plates, name of trucking company or any other form of identification That information is crucial, especially when filing a police report.

Then, you can contact the trucking company and seek money to repair damages.

Sorry to hear about your car. That really does suck.

I can understand that the kidney grill being cheap ABS plastic would break and the windshield would chip also, but not for anything, why isn't your car covered with some sort of clearbra? They're not perfect but they would minimize the damage to your car.

Something to think about in the future.

Few years back I was driving my approximately year old 330xi back from the Atlanta airport. Took my exit and hit what I thought was a wet spot on the road, which was strange because there was no other rain anywhere else. Next morning I figured out what the wet spot was. Somebody had lost some industrial sized paint cans on the road and left them, so my car had paint spattered all over it! Nice surprise..
