Fuel door won't open

So I am at the gas station the other day. The bonnet was up and the boot was open. Or... if you prefer -- The hood was up and the trunk was open. Either way, the fuel door would not open. For a few minutes I was stumped. So I closed the trunk and lower the hood and thought I'd try once more to open the fuel cap. Much to my surprise and happiness the fuel door opens as simply as it always has.

Anyone else experience this strange X-files type phenomenon?

Happend to my 525i

I don't have an M3 yet - hope to soon - but my wife's 2001 525i had this happen a number of times a fwe years back. I took more than a year before the dealer swapped an electrical component (sorry - forgot which one) that seem to do the trick.

The car was blowing fuses which was related. I hope its not the same issue.

easy fix...if you try and open the fuel door while either the trunk or hood are open, it won't...you have to shut both and try again in 10 minutes.

do you know what's the logic behind this? I can suspect the reason for not allowing the fuel tank door open when the hood is up, but the trunk?

if the doors are locked the fuel door is locked...we have had alot of failures of the popper for the gas door that pops it open when you push on it..does the door open if you use your fingernails and pull it open?
