Relocating to Virginia

Hey guys,

I got a job offer from a company in Lynchburg Virginia and is looking into the area right now, can someone from the area or previous lived there offer me some advice?

1. Where should I look to rent for a nice neighborhood so I don't have to worry about parking my M4 when going to bed?

2. What is the car culture like down there? Will I be able to find good shops to do work on? Can I pass emission with catless dp? How are police feel about window tint and no front plate?

3. How is the area to live in general?

4. Anyone have any experience towing their car with an U-Haul? It's 550 miles away from where I am now, not sure if I want to drive it down there.

Thanks in advance!

I haven’t lived there but I go there a lot for travel:

2: Mostly trucks and SUVs there with the occasional riced out imports. Not too many Bimmers and definitely not many M3s. I saw one over the last few years I’ve been down there. Not sure if Lynchburg falls into one of the counties that requires emissions but if it does, VA requires the catalyst monitor to be in a ready state so you will fail.

4: what prevents you from driving your car? 550 miles is nothing.

Thanks for the reply, do you know if there is any shady areas I should avoid? I don't mind driving 550 miles down but I can't really pack anything in my M4 so I would have to get a Uhaul to get stuff there. That means I either get a friend to drive that for me or fly back and drive the 550 miles again in the M4...

Regarding the tint and no front plate.....

If you have no front plate and tint that is below 50% front and 35% rear and the officer is just bored enough, they can pull you over and issue you a ticket (I know cause that's what they did to me). Front plate is required. I don't run them on any of my cars but you can get ticketed for it.

Yeah I don't currently have tint cause I can't have them in RI. Front plate is also required. I got pulled over in my Hyundai without a front plate within 2 months, but with both of my BMWs, 440i and M4, never got pulled over for it.

Will you be changing registration from RI to VA?
Bc if you don’t and keep as is they will not mess with the plate and/or tints.
The inspection part would be the only issue. Perhaps not even do it ? But that would probably suspend ur registration or not allow you to renew.

DK if there are VA excise or property taxes on cars, but RI's are outrageous so best to get VA reg ASAP. One thing about almost all the RI towns, they bill the excise tax in arrears, the bills they send out in July or Aug are for the July-June of the previous year, so you will still be paying long after moving. When I left RI I had the town clerk update my address after canceling plates so they would send the tax bills to me and not get in trouble for not paying, which will result in a lien.

Also RI inspection & emissions is strict & ridiculous so likely only to get better elsewhere.

Thanks guys, I will probably be getting VA reg. Still some times to figure this out as I have to wait for my clearance to start the new job, might just take a short trip down there for a few days to explore the area.

From what I know of Lynchburg, it’s very remote and country like. Nothing at all going for it.
