M3 Trend Analysis - Doug DeMuro

Interesting take on past and present M3/4 and where they stand sales wise.

Surprised nobody posted this yet. Doug Demuro did a video and his thoughts closely mirror many of those posted here in regards to increasing values on M3s, E9x in particular. It's a good watch.

I like Doug but he needs to fact-check himself sometimes before making a video.

In his defense, this guy goes from reviewing a $2M electric car to a Pontic Vibe GT and pretty much everything in between, I imagine he may miss a few details on year specific models.

I'm sure off the top of your head (not googling) some of you can't remember the year Porsche switched from air cooled to liquid cooled engines

Even BMW dealers list the DCT as an Automatic. But Doug is an enthusiast, and should know better

e9x manual is ok compared to other sports cars, but the DCT (when shifted manually) is really good during sport/track driving even compared to modern-day DCTs or PDKs.

It's not that they want a 6 speed, they just don't know how or don't want to drive one. At the same time, they don't want the shame of being associated with an automatic gearbox.

I remember back in the E36 days, it was actually embarrassing to drive an automatic M3. People would jump on the auto owners and how they drove an "autotragic" or "slushbox" and they had no retort.

The same crowd then changed their tune when DCT came along. Oh now it has a clutch, therefore it's the same as a manual. Nope, it's not. It's closer to a slushbox than it will ever be to a manual. Unless the shifter has gates and there is a 3rd pedal, you drive an automatic or an automated manual, but most of the work is being done by the car, not the driver.

A manual has the driver making the decisions, and punishing them for making the wrong ones (e.g. $$$hift). An auto will just bail you out by bouncing off the limiter or switching to the next gear.

FWIW, I drive an auto m4CS.

I think their at many reasons why one picks one transmission over the other. Maybe they want the wife/girl to drive it, maybe because it’s faster on the track, maybe the have a long commute that’s heavy in traffic. A lot of reasons outside of what you mentioned.
FWIW, I have both and I prefer DCT.

I have both too, sadly my manual is a base Chevy Sonic, and M4CS the DCT. It should really be the other way around.

Don't be dense, everyone here knows the DCT is an automated manual transmission. It's the literal definition. Referring to it as an "automatic" is disingenuous as that term is reserved for a traditional automatic transmission.
But it's not though. A DCT may share some parts with an actual manual transmission, but at the end of the day, you pull the lever into drive and let the car do everything but steer and brake. Is a DCT a better experience than a traditional slush box, you bet. Is it engaging like a manual, no, of course not.
A lot of BMW M owners buy these cars as a status symbol, BMW recognized that in the late 90s and started offering automatic transmissions on M models. Believe it or not, BMW once claimed that every M car will only be RWD and only offer a manual transmission.
