Tire blew-out on the interstate today
Have never experienced this type of failure; I was transitioning between asphalt and the concrete as I moved onto a bridge/overpass and hit a slight "bump" as I did so. I heard a loud pop and the tire pressure monitor instantly came on. The car immediatley starting steering itself to the right, so I knew something bad had happened.
Got off at the exit literally 500 feet away, and parked at closest spot I could find. Waited an hour for a tow truck; the dude showed up, tried, and said he couldn't get my car onto his truck; ...and then, I waited another hour and a half for a second truck to come out there. Running Pilot Sport PS2s. ¯\_(ツ)_/¯ |

The lack of a spare is frustrating. I once had a similar experience. I was able to get a ride home and grab a couple of my winter wheels. After that I bought a Bimmerzone spare. I did have to use that once for a slower leak.

That looks like something punctured the side wall or you had a bubble there that blew out.
I know with RunFlat tires if you hit a pothole hard enough it can cause a bubble in the side wall and eventually that can cause the tire to blow out. But I think that's only a RFT issue...

How old are the tires? PS2 is a pretty old tire design...though it is still produced in some sizes.

I spent 10 years working for Bridgestone. Looks like the tire was running low on air or had a history off for a while and when you hit the bump it pinched the sidewall.

Let me actually rephrase my original statement. These were Pilot Super Sports in the front, I am still running PS2s in the rear at current that I will be replacing soon.
The pressure in the tires were not off at all, to my knowledge. In fact, I had just recently had the car serviced and specifically asked the mto check the tire pressure and make sure all was good, as I was planning about ~40-60 hours of pure driving over a ~3-4 day period. Luckily this happened while I was only 10 minutes from home, after I got back, and not while I was 7+ hours from home. |

I've had a tire fail this way before just from hitting a large bump in the road similar to what you did. Sometimes these low profile tires just burst without any other causing factors when the impact is strong enough, so most likely not your fault. |

I suspect what you are referring to is where he drove on the deflated tire to get off of the interstate.

In regards to the tire pressure, the guy actually legit knows what he's doing, and is the only honest mechanic I've EVER met, lol. He actually has a tendendency to forget to do things sometimes, but admits and owns up to his mistakes and has refunded me twice for things he informed me that he forgot to do after the fact, without me even inquiring about anything...he caught it on his own. He's a good guy and I actually trust him a lot. He drives en e36 M3 and treats my two cars I take to him as if they were his own. That being said, I do keep a tire gauge in my car. I just hadn't checked it recently. I'll definitely start monitoring it more often in the future. |

I have had an instant blowout before (not in the M3) on the highway and it is not fun. Brand new tires taken out by our lovely California roads... Had to get from the left lane to the right shoulder and then decided to make it to the off-ramp because it didn't feel remotely safe sitting there with traffic flying by. People die out there!

Ouch. Thankfully you made out and were able to get off the highway with no real harm.
I have never had a blow out but I have dropped into a couple potholes very common on roads here in Mass which caused bubbling of the sidewall. |

PS2 is an old Michelin tire . Possible cause can be tire (rubber) rot .
Remember Paul Walker in his Porsche GT...
