2016 BMW X5 50 - which coils to buy?
Folks,
I just got back my car from the dealership from my 4th visit for the same issue and they replaced 2 coils under warranty. During the 3rd visit they replaced the spark plugs with x5m plugs and my SA said something about this being done as part of a service bulletin but I have not been able to get a copy of the actual receipt to verify and post the SB details here. Upon leaving the dealership with my car I realized that even though I have an extended BMW warranty to 100K I do not want to go back when each coil starts to go out as the shop foremen said that would more than likely happen. The thought of taking the car to the dealership and waiting 3-5 days for them to even take it back to determine the issue is not something I want to endure. My X5 has been in the BMW garage more than my own in the last 4 months which is terribly frustrating on so many levels. Anyway, I got to thinking I should change them out on my own as the overall dealer/service experience at the 2 BMW dealerships I have visited in Atlanta has been beyond awful to say the least. Can anyone tell me the best place to buy the needed coils as factory OEM from BMW are about $65 each and Bosch OE are around $25 each. Also, are there any other items that I should change while I am going to be in the engine bay replacing the coils? Of course any big ticket items i will leave for the dealership to change under warranty but if I can avoid the dealership and the red tape I will so long as it doesn't break the bank also, FWIW my car just passed 65K miles and this the 2nd set of plugs in the last 25k miles. Any and all guidance is greatly appreciated -TIA everybody -Mike |

Buy OEM BMW from FCP Euro. They sell everything with a lifetime warranty, so you always have peace of mind you are covered for the rest of time.

If your coils are working fine, I don't see a reason to replace them. It's not something that will fail suddenly (very rarely anyways) that you'll be stuck on the side of the road.

Rock auto found them for about $20 each / Bosch coils. I was also having a issue dealer replaced all coils and plugs for me , super happy as I was about to buy coils and plugs and change them my self!

I changed the spark plugs myself with the x5m plug. Gaps were getting pretty wide on original plugs with 54k miles. The coils are super easy to change if/when the time comes. I will say once you pop open the flip latch to remove the wiring harness, you have to pull pretty hard on the coil to get it to release from the plug. Once you realize how much force is needed on the first one, the others are easy.
