*Review* BPM OBD Tune - Autobahn Top Speed Run with Pics
Edit: Added dyno sheet. I forgot to put in 102 octane (96 US AKI) so this run was with 98 (US 93 AKI). Next time I'll do a run with the better gas, and I'll have them test efficient mode as well, where supposedly I only have 80% power. What's noteworthy about this dyno pull is how smooth the power curve is.
Edit: video is here: I got up to 196 mph (317 km/h), per my GPS app. It took forever to get that extra 15 mph, I'm talking kilometers! I ended up giving up at 196 mph, I was at about 7300-7400 rpm, but it was just taking forever so I decided to call the top speed 196 mph on stock 6MT gearing. Maybe it'll hit 200 mph downhill, but where are you ever going to find a long steep straight enough hill? Original post below: I've had the BPM OBD tune for about a month now. After a hiccup getting shipping to recognize my address on their e-cart, they manually were able to get my order placed and the cable came in a reasonable amount of time. The turnaround was about 4-5 days once I sent them my file, and the instructions were straightforward as long as you read them carefully and follow them exactly. I got it with the stage 1 tune, vMax delete, .5 sec startup roar and burble. I also got the gauges with the higher HP display. Luckily in Germany every Shell station consistently has 100 RON (94 US AKI) and every Aral (which is BP everywhere else) has 102 RON (96 US AKI), so I requested that my tune be optimized for 100 RON (94 US AKI). If you're curious why and how the US measures octane differently (RON/MON*2 and AKI) then read wikipedia: https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Octane_rating I've been trying to see what the actual ungoverned top speed of my relatively stock F82 is, but I still haven't been able to hit it due to running out of space. However, I will say that the 167mph/270km/h governor is definitely removed. I had to shut it down at 294 km/h (183 mph) both times because I was running out of room and i didn’t want to melt my winter tires which are only W rated to 168 mph. It pulls really slowly from about 170 mph and it was taking forever to gain more speed so I just backed off about 600 more RPM before redline to play with. When I get my summer PS4s mounted, I'll head out to a more secluded part of the country and I'll see where I end up top speed wise. I will say that the first time the day after I installed the tune, I forgot that I still had my BMS Stage 1 piggyback tune hooked up with the 4 psi boost across the board. I took it off, and noticed a significant difference. I'm not sure if it would be safe to keep on like that long term though! The stage 1 from BPM still seems fairly quick, although I don't have a dyno to back it up. But cold start is definitely gone, and my sport display shows up to 560 hp. The start up roar reminds me of my Corvette! Just how it should sound when you crank it up. It appears to add a quick blip or a little bit of throttle on startup to give it a sharp sound before it goes back to fast idle. I already have the CSC Sound Controller, so my flaps are always open already anyways. The burble only works in Sport and Sport+ on mine, but it gives a nasty but cool sounding backfire when you lift off the pedal at certain rpms. I think mine is the moderate one, I actually wish I had the more aggressive version now. Overall, about a thousand bucks seemingly well spent, it fixes quite a few gripes about my car that I wish BMW just included stock with the base models. One thing I wish I had gotten tuned was rev match in Sport+, because I had gotten lazy and used to rev matching and driving around in the other modes, that this little euro box car pulled in the left lane without warning on the autobahn the other day, I downshifted and neglected to rev match! Won't do that again... I have pretty comprehensive videos from all angles as you could imagine, but it takes time to edit/join, etc. so I'll post em up later. Thanks for reading my review. He's got another 600rpm to go so definitely can crack 300. Looking forward to the vids.
Also would like to know how it felt at that speed, at some point in the life of this car I will find a place to top it out

Yeah I meant higher acceleration since OP said car felt slower 170mph and up

Well, I tried again, Easter Sunday early in the morning. I had to drive to the big airport about 130km away from here to fly out to Morrocco for the week, so I figured I’d try again. About 40km from my apartment there is a nice relatively long straight and smooth section that goes about 3 km. I ended up pegging out my speedometer, but the GPS logger app said I was going 193 mph. I didn’t look at the tach because I was too busy concentrating, but the car was still gaining speed when I had to shut it down. So today I learnt 3 things about this car. 1. Speedometer is about 10 mph off when it indicates 200 mph. 2. The car pulls hard to about 160mph and then tapers off. From about 160-175, it can still accelerate up small hills. Above 175 it will only accelerate flat and level or down a hill, albeit slowly. 3. When small cars decide to pull in front of you into the left lane while you’re at 180mph, the stock brakes don’t last very long before fading. I’m thinking of some brake upgrades before I hit the Nurburgring and other tracks this summer. Trip computer said 9 mpg fuel Economy and I made the trip in about 35 mins with a 170km/h average speed. So, when you’re at redline, the solution is to get more horsepower to go faster for a given amount of revs! Sorry, I don’t have a screenshot of my GPS logger when I hit 193mph. It crashed in the middle of the run! Last edited by fiveninerzero; 04-01-2018 at 03:41 AM.. |

I never felt like I was going to lose it. I actually could steer with 1 hand and I could put my turn signal on to change lanes to pass people. The autobahn also has gentle curves that you can slow down slightly for to take at around 160 mph.
The back end understandably would wag when I hit bumps but the MDM light would flash and deal with it and I wouldn’t even notice it. The suspension did a good job of damping it. I even got into some rain and I had to slow down to 150mph but I never had to worry about hydroplanes. I wouldnt dare turn MDM off though, I’m not sure how that would go. My windshield wipers on the other hand, hate me. They looked like they wanted to launch into outer space at 180 mph. |

Do they have airport runs where you can test drive the car at these speeds?

That's a great top speed run, be safe out there. I have to say I did not think the gearing was that different for the 6MT vs DCT. Seems that ~300-305km/h is the limit with the 6MT gearing.
The highest I've gotten with my DCT F80 is 293km/h and if IIRC that was at about ~7000rpm in 6th gear, so still had an entire gear left to go. So I assume with the DCT gearing it is theoretically possible to go well beyond the 6MT speed limit (I knew they had different gearing ratios, but I didn't expect the difference to be that significant).

Yes, but judging from my acceleration experiences, this car would need at least a 12,000ft runway. Any airport with a runway that long is more concerned with landing fees from 777s than rent from cheap car guys. And the. You would have to stand on your brakes at the end!

How so?
Yes 5th is 1:1 with the DCT as well, and now upon checking the specs they also have pretty close gearing in 6th 0.846 vs 0.844. So redline in 6th both 6MT and DCT should reach about the same speed. But once again, the DCT has a 7th gear so it can theoretically exceed whatever speed a 6MT reaches by quite a bit.
