Does anyone know how to tie a certain engine to a chassis? When I get home I'm going to see if the numbers on the block and bed plate match the vin. In the meantime, anyone know?

They do not match the vin. The engine is serialized. The bed plate and block should match each other, but they are not the VIN. The serial is assigned to a chassis at the factory but there is no easy way to identify the chassis number that a particular engine was assigned to. Unless you have stellar dealership ties or know someone at BMWNA there's no way to know.

It opens the door for dishonest junkyard operators selling engines from 100k mile cars as 40k engines... Average joes can't know like they used to when VINs were stamped on blocks.
