New M4 body style when?
When do you guys think they will be revamping the M4 body style? Im not super familiar with the history and Im just wondering because I won't likely be purchasing one for another 12 months. Would hate to buy a new one if the next model was about to be released. I know its impossible to say for sure but just wondering what the "cycle" usually is

It's actually not hard to estimate this. There's typically a seven year lifespan for any given BMW model. M models trail the introduction of the series car they are based on so they don't get the full seven years of production, but they do retain the seven year cycle.
So, given that the current M4 launched in 2014, the next one should be here in 2021. If you were wondering about the LCI for the current model, it should be early 2017, which is 3.5 years into the 4 Series model run. |

Is this not a true LCI? Should there be one coming in 2016 or 2017? I ask because I am on the same boat. I am thinking of ordering an M3 during 2016. If there is a refresh coming mid 2016 or 2017, then I may want to delay that order. Thanks! |

- BMW F30 (3 series) was launched in late 2011 as a 2012 model
- All new 3 Series model will be launched in 2019 - BMW F32 (4 series) was launched in mid 2013 as a 2014 model - All new 4 Series model will be launched in 2021 - BMW F8x (M3 and M4) was launched in February 2014 as a 2014 model - All new M3 & M4 will be launched in 2021 As you can see ... the 3 series (which the M3 is based on) will be replaced earliest (Sometime in 2019). So by 2019 ... you will see brand new 3 series on the road while your M3 will still be of the previous generation. So if you want model longevity (at least in terms of exterior shape) ... get the M4. Alternatively, sell your new M3 by 2019 ... that's if you care a lot about driving "last generation" car ... but then again you'll be missing the point of driving ///M car ... |

The new 4 series won't be out until about model year 2021 The completely redesigned M4 won't be out til model year 2022 These are best guesses based on the last generation. So relax, you have plenty of time. This car has just barely started its second year of life, and typically it has a 5 year model year span. |

Now, as you point out, some changes that come at LCI time actually span across to models that are not receiving their LCI but share a platform with models that are. This is generally the case for any parts shared across those models that are being updated, since it usually doesn't make sense to have two different parts to do the same thing. This goes both ways by the way, so there may very well be minor changes to the 3/M3 at the time of the 4/M4 LCI just as the opposite was true. (*) Actually, even that is a bit of an oversimplification now that we have models like the 3 Series GT. For this vehicle, even though it is a 3 Series, they delayed the LCI until next year. But in general sedan/touring get LCI at the same time, as do coupe/convertible/Gran Coupe. Quote:

M4 a year after that in 2021 as MY2022, assuming M Division sticks to the same quick turn around. |

So my plan is to do an ED on an M4 next ~September. Being a 2017 model will it have LCI updates? And, if I do a 4 year lease (I've never done one, but buying and selling the car can be a pain so I'm considering it depending on hos the cost goes) should that get me to the next model?

The key is the difference between calendar year and model year, which I think is what most people get confused. We can anticipate the LCI around summer 2017 when the 2018 model year M4's begin production. |
