This kind of operation looks remarkably like the process of a dealer selling a car for an amount over the invoice price. I bet there are probably some legal ramifications people havn't figured out yet.

IMO, the dealership needs to enact some business practices that would discourage this type of behavior. The dealer should allow this guy to either get his deposit back and walk away or purchase the car he ordered. After the buy, if he wants to turn around and sell the car to someone willing to pay the premium, that's up to him (and the other guy).

since he is behaving like a car-dealer selling cars for a profit in volume, he probably owes some sort of warranty to they buyers.

I would rather not own a car than buy one from a guy/dealer like this. There is nothing in life I want so bad that I will will pay more than its worth or support business practices like this. But thats just me, to each is their own.

My client advisor looked this up in the system:

"It looks like this car has been ordered form Bellevue BMW. It is interesting to note that this car is in 112 status...certainly not one of the "first" to be delivered. In fact, BMW pushed back production of the cars with the 19" wheel option due to availability issues with the wheels. Only those cars that are currently "locked" are going to get the wheels. BMW did delete this option from all of the cars that were slated for a February production. You got lucky on yours."

I can't believe my car will be delayed because BMW could not do proper supply chain management on the wheels. I mean, if it's DCT or something complicated like that, OK, but how can they mess up the wheels?

Greg, can you see 19" wheels as an option on your OC order tracking screen together with the rest of the options? Somebody said 19" wheels never show up, but I am wondering if they are not showing up on mine because of this delay (you dealer says "this options was deleted", which is hard to interpret).

Like most components, BMW relies on suppliers for the wheels. Either 1) there was poor planning, 2) the demand exceeded predictions, or 3) there were production issues such as material shortages, equipment breakdown, strikes, etc. Lots of variables, expecially since most manufacturers use "just in time" deliveries now.

No, it does not show up. Have your CA check you order. They would not delete the option from your order if the wheels are not available; they would push your production date back.

Sure, but this has been made into a science in the past 20 years or so. People graduate with advanced degrees in supply chain management. Just strikes me as odd, and more of a goof I guess...

Thanks for letting me that yours doesn't have it either. I've just sent an email to my dealer to see if he knows anything about it, and got this back:

"not sure yet-your car should be ok"

Lucid,

My order was placed back on January 19th. On Jan. 25th my dealer sent me the Vehicle Inquiry Report which has the 19inch rims on it. When I later went on the OC site the rims didn't show up. I asked the dealer if he made a mistake but he assured me that all options on the VIR report confirms the options are ordered.
BTW...I'm at status 111 but no specific production date. I was told it's slated for first week of March. I wonder if it will be delayed now with the recent info of the shortage of 19's. I sure hope not, that would be crazy.

My order was placed on 01/28, and I am #111 with no specific production date either. So, we are probably in a similar situation. My dealer claims wheels should not be problem. We'll see...

Greg,

What exactly does "locked" mean? Is that Status 111 with confirmed production dates or status 112 or status 150? Also, I am confused on the Feb production wheel option deletion; will you explain?

I just spoke with the dealer on this. I'm in the 111 club as well with DCT and 19" wheels. Estimated production is first week of March. He claims all will be ok, and cars that have the 19" wheels currently ordered should be ok ... but who knows ??!!

150 status (start of production) is when the order is "locked" and no further changes are possible.

19" wheels would not be deleted from an order is there is a supply issue. What will happen is the production date will slide until the supply catches up.

Thanks Greg,

I just sent my CA an e-mail to check my status and see if this will push my production further out. If it does, I might see if I can change to 18"s, save $1200 and keep my current production date.

hey, if he finds an ass that doesn't know what they're talking about, more power to him.

this reminds me of the time when people tried to sell the iPhones for $99,999 the day it came out. it wasn't until later when people realized there actually wasn't any shortage of them.

Well, according to Ebay, he sold for $77,420 against a list price of $71,420. Looks like somebody REALLY wanted the car!
