Exclamation 135i getting 6 piston Calipers!

Just reading through the planning document for the 1 series..... The 135i is getting 6 pot front calipers.....here are some other details (stuff that I found interesting....)

(No, I can't post the document)....

Engine: 300 hp @ 5800 rpm, 300 foot pounds from 1400 - 5000 rpm
Performance: 0-100 kph in 5.3 seconds (Euro Spec)
Braking: 6 piston calipers upfront

And the other nugget...

Electronic Rear Diff Lock: Functions through rear brake management system and works only if DSC is completely disabled.....


Nav / iDrive available, 60/40 folding rear seats etc.....blah blah...looks like the 135i has some things the 335i doesn't......

BMW quotes the E90 as having Electronic Differential Lock... however I was under the impression that it worked when DSC is on??

it's been discussed before, the consensus is that that's their marketing department at work by saying "we kinda maybe sorta have a semi- quasi- LSD"

Are 6 piston calipers good for anything other than penis size inflation? I mean, I'm pretty sure they're not better in any way than 2 pistons, are they?

I wish I had them for my M6......for no other reason than with fixed calipers I can swap out brake pads in 30 minutes. But fixed pot calipers look cool and do put down more even force on the rotor than floating calipers......

Look at the official photos....you can see them!

I found it interesting that BMW is choosing the 1 series to intro the fixed calipers and not the new M3.

Depends on the size of the pistons. 2 big ones with 6 small ones of the same size are no better, I believe.

you are correct sir,

6 pistons just allows for more even pressure across the pad

also note, current BMW's have 1 pistion calipers, not 2


but yeah, one big one, six small ones it's not really that big of a deal

This one of the things that amazes me about the E90. It has just one big piston in the front caliper, nothing fancy mind you, and it stops within a few feet of the same distance at 70MPH of many supercars. Granted, a supercar's brakes will probably last longer without fade under track use, but still, it's damned impressive.

+1 I thought 1 piston were absolute junk but I believe the M3/M5 have em, right? 550 has 1 piston.

For anyone who has done their own brakes at some point, 1 piston get nasty after a hundred thousand miles, the guide pins get touchy and if they're not working right, bada bing the pads are dragging and the rotor getting warm or hot. imho when new, they work fine. Years down the road, I think they're less effective than a 4 or 6 piston setup in front. Even WRX non STi has a 4 piston up front I believe.

I'm not even sure how one compresses the pistons on a 4 setup because the tool I own is not going to be able to get in there to do the compression, as far as I know. The 1 piston caliper is like FWD--it came about to save the mfg. money and complexity.

The floating calipers are lighter and more importantly cheaper. The square heads at BMW have dug in on this issue until now.

I have personally seen floating calipers "Taco" at the track. A Z28SS was going down a straight and at the end of the straight, he had no brakes. We pulled the wheel off the familiar "U" shape of the caliper was now a "W". There was so much heat that the caliper bent......

Also when you start tracking these things, there is quite a bit of flex so you don't have the ideal contact patch between the rotor and pad.

This doesn't mean much for the Yuppie in a suit but means alot to us car nuts who do track their cars.

I just use the old pad an two c-clamps...

One of the Reasons 6 are better than one are heat distribution through the pads and even pressure over a larger surface area. thats why six pistons are better!
