Guys w/ expensive (or cheap) aftermarket audio systems.......
I plan on putting my system in my e90. I have 2 12's and a 2400 watt amp. This will happen in the next two weeks.
My question is do you guys (that have systems in their car) have the OEM alarm or aftermarket alarm? I am torn on this decision because I like the OEM fitment and quality but I think my equipment will be better protected with the aftermarket alarm. I have the OEM alarm in the shopping cart on tisher's website but i haven't pulled the trigger in over a weeks now. I value your opinion fellas, what do you all think? |

Regardless of which alarm you have, if someone knows what they're doing, they'll get anything they want. You'll also need the car programmed to use the OEM alarm. So be sure to add an hours worth of labor to the total cost.

I've heard a lot of stock audio and the Logic7 isn't the greatest, but it's in the top 25% of higher end systems. |

thx bro, but I am more interested in comments about the alarm.
Personally I like what I put in "my car" and I think its nice to have a little sound pressure when driving. And so do lot more "BMW" drivers that are far from a highschool age and mindset. |

Put it this way if I was to put in a system it would be done right, not some cheap ass unit.

Put whatever you want into the car. It's your car. You make the payments, you put gas in it.
As far as the alarm goes, OEM is ~ok. Theres the interior ultra sonic sensor in the cabin and the horn has (please don't quote me on this) a tilt sensor built in. Thats basically what your going to get with any other alarm minus maybe an exterior motion detector and the old flamethrower door handles. An aftermarket alarm may also have a back up battery which is nice. Really its a matter of choice. Be happy with OEM fit and finish knowing it will work every time and if it doesn't you can take it to the dealer for a look. OR you can try an aftermarket alarm and pay a slightly higher price initially but get extra features. Honestly it comes down to this: If a thief wants stuff in your car or they want the whole car they will get it. Time is on their side, all they have to do is sit back and wait for the right time. The question is what will you be satisfied should the system you put in fail. Ultimately its you who is going to have to decide. GOOD LUCK BRO.

my friend put in an aftermarket alarm in his car (not a bmw). you get a bulky, ugly remote .. but its a great system. it glitches every now and then, so i guess that would be the downside to aftermarket. personally i would pick OEM over aftermarket. i'm actually thinking of getting the OEM one as well if the price + install is reasonable. how much does it go for?

I agree with your comment regarding the car acoustics, but I have decided to suffer it. I do have the OEM alarm, factory installed, and although it is substandard compared to a number of aftermarket units, it is well integrated with the car and with the CA, and it is quite reliable. It has ultrasonic sensor inside the car and tilt sensing, and will detect if someone opens the hood of the car, which comes in handy if you have the battery on a maintainer. Most of the time I am not aware I am setting it, and when I trigger it inadvertently, say, by opening the hood to disconnect the battery tender, it goes off in a way that makes me want to run away from my own car. I cannot tell you though how effective it would be in protecting your acoustic system, so far, I think, nobody tried to break into the car.

2400W amp for 2 subs???
I'm confused as to why someone would rip out an audio system that runs all channels through fiber optics (super clear!) and replace it with ol' copper wire. This is the equivelent to popping off your intake manifold and gluing a carb on. Oh, and your amp is not SQ. it has 1%THD, that's not SQ. Its just bass |

Your just putting in subs right? Why don't you just lock your trunk. Use the valet switch in the glovebox and lock it.

Stick with 1 Ten inch W7 if anythnig. I had 2 12's of Re audio XXX subs which is one of the best in market and my car/trunk linens started falling apart and sounds like crap.
Even with an extra yellow top battery in trunk with caps and etc.. Lights and headlights would dim ever thump. Trust me i was all into SUBS but thats just an overkill. I have a 10 inch w7 with 500/1 in a ported box and its perfect if not too loud.

With regard to the HighSchool commment; I completely agree! Kids get 12's cuz they are loud as hell and hit hard, and because people rap about them. 12's are very, VERY, slow. Once you get even to low-mids they completely drop off, which makes for a very annoying and abrupt sound change.

One 10'' in this car would be plenty, Id personally go with an sealed box. Its not quite as load but has a better range. Best solution (of the ones ive seen on this forum) would be the series of 8''s It'd provide all the 'pressure' you'd want and be great for low-mids. Sad part is the cost. Quick question tho; Could you replace the woofers under the seats with high-end aftermarkets and run then to a new amp to? BMW says there 8.5" But hey, your right; its your car, do with it what you want!
