2024 X5 Apple Carplay Issue
Carplay seems to have a mind of it's own when it chooses to connect or not. In most cases it doesn't connect and I get an error. I have tried a hard reset by holding down the power button until it goes black and have tried forgetting the devices on the phone side and bmw menu side. Anyone find a solve for this? My 2023 X5, 22 M3 and 21 M5 with the previous iDrive have no issues whatsoever connecting.

Don’t have a solution. Mine was working reasonably well for a while (8.5, iPhone 14 Pro). Just slow to connect sometimes. Going to the Mobile Device list and tapping on the CarPlay connection icon to make the car retry usually solved it for me.
Has gotten worse in the last two weeks or so. Today was particularly bad. Rebooting iDrive, phone, forgetting and reestablishing connection, … Tried with the various Siri settings, using ‘enhanced CarPlay’ on the phone, … no noticeable difference. My latest hypothesis is that it doesn’t like to be connected to the USB port - it was today to charge the phone. I may try to get a USB to lightning cable to charge in the middle console. Apple is scheduled to push out a iOS update next week, probably Tuesday. Maybe it will work better after that. |

I think it is more related to iDrive 8.5. I have two LCI's one on 8 and the other on 8.5, and we have no issues on the LCI with iDrive 8.
Usually, re-booting 8.5 re-connects my iPhone 14 Pro. |

For all these Carplay connectivity issues, its helpful to know what version of vehicle software is installed on your car. For example, are you running the very latest version. e.g. 07/2023.58

I use ID 8.5 07/2023.35 without issues. Paired with iPhone 12.

I am on 07/2023.33 too. AFAIK, there has been no updated software for the 50e. My 50e is only 5 weeks old after production.

sDrive 40i here with 07/2023.40. The two biggest issues are intermittent CarPlay connectivity issues during startup and also missing center display data on the instrument cluster at random times.
Hopefully 07/2023.58 will help with these two issues. |

I don't think it's an Apple issue. Happens on both my android and Apple devices. Praying for an OTA that fixes the issue. I'm on 07.2023 35

Had attached message come up on my phone. That was after the Bluetooth not compatible error on car screen and reconnecting through car menu (under mobile devices).
Can’t recall seeing this before. I selected don’t allow. Will report back if it makes any difference. |

AFAIK BMW doesn’t push subsequent smaller patch versions (the last two digits “.xx”) OTA***. they likely don’t address this CarPlay issue anyway as it’s not working for some on .33, but it’s working without issues for one person on .35 but not another on the same version. plus, other folks on later versions .40 and .58 are having issues
the next OTA will be one of the major versions (11.xxxx, 03.xxxx, 07.xxxx) ***maybe TurtleBoy can clarify if smaller patch versions have a history of being released OTA, i.e. to address urgent/critical issues |

Major versions are released three times a year in March, July and November (03/yyyy, 07/yyyy, and 11/yyyy) and sub versions are constantly being released. BMW generally chooses a sub version that has been out in the field awhile for the OTA. In the current case it looks like .53 is the OTA version. The same sub version is usually, perhaps always, used for the OTA for the major version so you will never receive the subsequent sub versions for that major version unless you get it from a dealer. https://g05.bimmerpost.com/forums/sh...6&postcount=81 After I posted that I remembered that there may have been a case where they were two sub versions issued as an OTA for the same major version. That would have been almost a year ago when there was a bug fix in a late version of 11/2022 dealing with the battery drain. I did not look back to verify that was the case.

The app will read XYZ in Carplay. You can disable this if you dont want this cluttering up your ID8.5 All apps. The feature simply means you can now navigate directly to the app in Carplay. You can create shortcuts for these apps as well. It appears to have no effect on ID8.5 connectivity issues. |

I've had frequent CarPlay connectivity issues since getting the vehicle a few months ago. Rarely could I go more than a day without having to reboot, re-pair the phone, etc.
Recently, I found a troubleshooting guide in the myBMW app for Bluetooth and Wi-Fi. It's accessed by clicking on the vehicle once the app is opened. Scroll down from the Doors & Windows, Tire Condition, Services, etc. all the way to the bottom and tap on Device Connection. There's a couple blue-boxed "i"s for Bluetooth Audio and Wi-Fi. After carefully performing each step, I discovered that the Local Network option permission in the phone settings was not even present. By opening the Wi-Fi/Personal Hotspot app in the vehicle, I immediately got a pop-up on the phone requesting access to Local Network. After accepting that, the option now appears and is enabled in Settings for the myBMW app on the phone. Since that time, about three days, I've had a rock solid CarPlay connection every time I've used the vehicle. No hiccups. I even updated the myBMW app today and updated to iOS 17.1 with no issues. For reference, I'm on iDrive software version 07/2023.35 and have been for weeks. For those with CarPlay issues, it might be worth the time to explore those steps in the troubleshooting guide to see if it helps. Good luck. Last edited by cat3dual; 10-25-2023 at 08:17 PM.. Looking forward to trying the solution above. I have a 50e with 8.5. In my experience I needed to completely unlock my phone and ensure it was unlocked before I even approached the vehicle. The vehicle would start talking with the phone even if I was only close and if the phone was locked it would struggle with carplay once I entered the vehicle.

There seems to be a lot that has to go right and settings perfectly tuned in multiple locations on the phone and vehicle for wireless CarPlay to work. Given your description above, you might check on your phone: Settings>General>CarPlay>BMW XXXXX. Note the descriptions in the attached pics. If that isn't your issue, hopefully the troubleshooting steps in the BMW app will help you establish a reliable connection. |
