What is this nasty scraping sound when braking

https://youtube.com/shorts/7PdYrxHNW...H-ihL8Ip6UVbuB

Anyone know what this sound is? It seems to be coming from the back left it started when I was on track

Can't hear that clearly but it's somewhat common for a little rock to get stuck between the rotor and shield.

Check your rear brake pads immediately. I really hope that it's not the case, but it could be that the rear pads have worn down to the backing plate which is now in contact with the rotor. If this is not the case, congratulations, and you really should be monitoring the pads closely anyway if you drive your car on track.

A rock (or something) trapped between the rotor and the dust shield usually results in a constant scraping sound, not just when the brakes are applied.

If you are not confident in your own self diagnostic abilities then take it to a shop ASAP, and good luck.

Yeah, someone who tracks (don't think it was you but maybe it was?) smoked the rear pads in an obscenely low mileage. Like 5k miles. Let me see if I can find the post...

Edit, it wasn't you, but you did post in the thread...

https://g80.bimmerpost.com/forums/sh...highlight=rear

And I was overly drastic. It was 12k miles. But someone else posted they smoked them in 11k. Yikes.

Ive gone to the backing plates on track on my fronts and nursed it 50 miles home on country back roads doing a lot of engine braking to keep off the brakes and minimize rotor wear..my rotors were fine.

Hey BB it's been awhile. I hope all is well with you. In my case it was the rears that went to the backing plates. Surprise, surprise! I managed to make it nearly all the way home (110 miles) on the Florida Turnpike without once touching the brake pedal, but then ran into total blockage due to a major accident somewhere ahead in the last 8 miles. Stop and go for the rest of the way. Very painful. I did find someone to cut the rotors though.

Sorry to hear this. Rather expensive rear rotors could be in your near future.

If you continue to track your car you need to watch the rear pads like a hawk. I mean several times during the day. And especially if you use OEM brake pads. You will be amazed at how quickly they wear away. When I was using OEM pads I never had a set of rears last more than a single day. In fact several times they didn't make it a full day. Hence my drive o' shame back home.

Let me be sure that I understand, the rear pads wear away before the fronts and last one track day?

It has nothing to do with TC intervention. I have driven these cars with with and without TC turned on and the results are the same. When these cars first came out the only source of brake pads was BMW and I bought 9 sets of rear pads so that I could drive my car on the track.

I addressed this in another thread.

You aren't going through an entire rear pad in one day.

Interesting and shocking at the sae time.
How long is the track/s you're using? How fast can you get there? How many hours/minutes are you on track in a track day? How many minutes each session is?

Thanks

have you tracked your car? The experience of those who have (above) would seem to disagree with your statement.

Ed, Glad to see you are back at it. Have you beat the doc yet?
Ive been off track for a while, been occupied with other priorities. Still holding on to the G82, though I have tried to find a reason to get something else, cant get excited enough to sell it..Especially with mine having ID7. Had to pull off the cobalts since my wife was tired of driving a freight train around town....but otherwise all good my man!

Sure have. You aren't going to burn through the entire rear pad in one track day.

You should be checking your tires/pads after every track day, surprised the pads lasted that long. You need to start maintaining your car properly, especially if you go to the track.

Rear pads are $14 https://www.rockauto.com/en/moreinfo...=1684&jsn=1405 buy a dozen sets and swap them every track day.

I continue to use the stock rotors for now. I use Cobalt Racing Brake pads and have for about 1 1/2 year. I get about 6-7 track days out of the rears, and about 11-12 track days out of the fronts. I love the way they perform, and the wear is acceptable to me.

Most of my driving is done at Sebring International Raceway which is 73 years old, 3.7 miles in length, and alternates between asphalt and 81 year old concrete. It was built as an Army Air Force Base in WWII. 3 long straights and 17 turns with very heavy braking zones. My top speed there is 140-145.

The average day is made up of 6 sessions of 30 min each. Sometimes more, sometimes less conditions permitting.
