Suspension feels alright but it looks out of shape
Hi Bimmers,
I just did my wheels alignment and found out that my rear dust boot/bump stops kinda look out of shape (photo attached). My F30 has low mileage (only 20kms) despite it's a 7years old car. Suspension and handling feel alright, I never had any problem. Is this time to change my suspension or is it possible to just change the bump stops? Last edited by richsoe; 06-27-2023 at 10:50 AM.. |

The shocks have to come out or it will be cumbersome to remove the top hats. It is not hard to do that. If the shocks will be re-used and not replaced with new, it is recommended for the main shaft of the shocks not to be spun in the main body while undoing the top nut and reassembling/re-torqueing back due to the internal seals' wear that already took place over the life of the shock (linear motion up and down). Will need the through socket and allen key to hold the shaft.

My opinion is that unless the shocks need to be replaced, just continue driving with those bump stops.
Removing the rear shocks is super easy in this car but I'm not sure I'd go through the effort just to replace bump stops on what appears to be a car with factory springs (ride height). |

I did this to my EDC shocks (both front and rear) a month ago because they were rusting pre-maturely... that's a full grit blast of the body, layer of rust primer and two layers of Royal Blue Tremclad rust paint. Kept the OEM bump stops at the rear. - Was lazy to disassemble the top hats although have brand new Dinan bump stops ready to go.
