Weird Whistling Noise?

Hi All,

I took delivery of my car and drove it a little over 1K miles back home with no issues. But after bringing it in for PPF, tint, ceramic coating and then break-in service I'm noticing a strange high pitch noise, almost like whistling whenever I get up to speed. I honestly can't pin point where the noise is coming from. At first I thought it might've been the wind hitting some loose films from the PPF or tints but I checked the car and there isn't any loose film anywhere. When I brought it up to my PPF guy, he said that he's heard of other G8X owners mentioning it and that it's the differential and should go away after about 2500 miles. Anyone else experiencing this? And does the explanation about the differential make any sense?

I recorded with my iPhone so it's a .m4a file which I had to zip up to be able to attached it with my response. If you able to open the file phone the audio is much clearer when I play it on my iPhone vs when I replayed it on my computer. The whistle starts right at the 3 seconds mark. I also noticed that it's audible while driving as soon as I hit 35MPH and it seems to come from the air vents?

I have a schedule appointment with my local dealer tomorrow. Will report back with an update. Hopefully they're able to find the cause - I know with this kind of thing it's hit or miss a lot of times.

I have a whistle noise (about 3-4kHz if that helps) and I believe it is in my right mirror. Hits at 40-48mph. I will listen to your vid when on a computer to see if it is similar.

Thank you! Really appreciate the input. Does your whistle noise go away at all after you get up to highway speed? Mine seems to stick around no matter how fast I go above 35.

It typically stays for me also. Had the dealer look at it and they said nothing they could do. I also had my windshield replaced and apparently the glass company did not replace a seal, but even once fixed the noise was still there

Just got back from the dealership...pretty uneventful and a waste of time. Apparently they do not do diagnostics on the weekend (weekends are meant for "express" service - I'm guessing that means routine maintenance work?) but I was still able to have one of the shop's foreman ride along with me to hear the noise. I was able to replicate the noise for him but what do you know today it decided to be more subtle and with rainy conditions the high pitch noise was barely audible with the sound of the rain hitting my windshield in the background while we were on the highway. He was able to make out the noise clearer when I was driving in the city going between 35-50MPH. He suspects that it is wind noise and that there's probably a seal or gap somewhere that's out of tolerance but then told me that I had to make a follow up appointment for them to do a proper diagnostic with auto tape.

Post date is 5/13. He mentioned he just got back and was unhappy about weekend service. 5/13 was on a Saturday.

This happened to 2 of my buddies. May or may not be helpful, but, one of them had aftermarket CF mirror caps and it had a slight gap. Replaced it and it was gone. The other had a small amount of ppf that had lifted on the mirror cap. He cut it back and the sound is gone.

I haven't gone back yet. The noise has died down a bit and while it's still there it doesn't seem to be as noticeable or maybe I've just learned to live with it.

I'll either bring the issue back up to the dealership during my first annual service or speak to my PPF shop when I bring the car back for the 90 days follow up. If I find the root cause I'll provide an update.

Thanks for the info! I don't have CF caps but I do have PPF on the OEM mirror caps. I checked the side the noise is coming from and didn't any loose films but I'll bringing the car back to my PPF shop for follow up in July and I'll ask them to check to see if there's any loose film.

Not the update I was expecting but I'm very happy with the results...the noise is gone I had another separate issue with my driver side fender and long story short I stopped by a certified BMW collision center the other week and got lucky. I explained the issue to one of the shop foreman and he was able to adjust both the fender and my hood and afterwards the wind noise was gone.

I made separate detailing the issue with my fender and what ended up happening at the collision center if anyone is interested...

I'm getting a whistling noise when going 25-30MPH and ONLY happens in this range. Will be bringing it into service soon. Anyone else have this issue?

Had this issue from my driver's side mirror (non-CF cap). Had the noise since brand new, but didn't bother me enough to deal with a specific service visit for it- wasn't super loud and only could hear it with the window down.

When I had it in for something else the dealer adjusted the mirror cap fit and now the noise is gone...

I get this same sound when I reach 50 mph, never when going slower.

I have stock mirror caps. No clue where it's coming from.

By chance did you see what they adjusted on the mirror cap or what they told you they did? Seem to have similar issue.
