Fuel Injection Cleaning Service- Is this BS?

Took my G80 in for oil change (about 13k miles) and BMW dealer recommended a $549 Fuel Injection Cleaning service. Is this BS?

Why is that not covered by the warranty???
Fuel injectors should not go bad after 13k miles

They sell an additive you can buy and use, its usually around ~$10 and recommended for people who dominantly drive in the city. Supposed to mix with gas every 2500 miles or so.

What does this service do? Seems like a nice way to line the dealers pockets. No car with 13k miles should need a $600 service like this.

I read an article (by AAA 'independent' lab) after watching a Porsche technical class about engine life discussing fuel injectors.
Long story short: top tier gas has magnitudes LESS build up on fuel injectors than non-top tier gas. Top tier gas providers (of which there are several, such as Shell, etc.) have each their own blends of additives to keep injectors clean.
Interestingly, they said switching to top tier gas after 5000 miles will clear out the gunk from "cheaper" --non-top tier--gas.
So it seems reasonable to do so, not reasonable for it to be hundreds of dollars.

Interesting timing as it seems a handful of G8x owners on the forums recently have been having fuel injector issues.

Costco is top tier gas but I think it causes a rougher idle than shell or it could just be me imagining things. Maybe it’s just as good or better because of higher turnover.

I always use top tier gas in the UK. I also bought some BMW additive as it was recommended on the forum. When I go to Ireland you can only get 95 ron and the tanks aren’t cleaned very often in some garages … will be back on the quality stuff ASAP

Yes! SA is on commission. Must be injector cleaner week.

If you are concerned about the injectors try a bottle of Techron® Concentrate Plus about $15.00.

That said at 13K miles you would have to be running sludge gas to foul the injectors.

Again, how can they try to steal someone’s money on the item that should be covered by warranty????

I wasn't having any issues with the fuel injection but this was their recommended service. Note that I have the basic maintenance package (oil, pads, etc.) but this was a charge. I think they are just making an extra buck.

I think Costco buys gas from various suppliers so it isn't always the same (as opposed to a Shell or something).

at that price point, mind as well purchase new injectors. If your running ethanol they surely clog up injectors which is pretty common to get them cleaned often.
