Which brakes are these? M Sport or no?

Can anyone tell from this pic which brakes I have? I bought this used 2017 440i which has the blue calipers similar to the M Sport ones but it does not have the M logo which most others seem to have. I did notice one line item in the VIN decoder mentioned "S3DZ Omission Of Additional Lettering, Outer". The car does have "S2VF Adaptive M Chassis", "S337 M Sports Package", "S715 M Aerodynamics Package", "S710 M Leather Steering Wheel" and "S2VF Adaptive M Chassis" if that is helpful.

You have the regular gray brakes. Someone painted them blue prior to your ownership.

10-4, Thanks for the clarification.

So are the MSport brakes that were available on the 440 the same as what was on the M4? If I wanted to upgrade would I just look for the M Sport brakes or the M4 brakes?

I am fairly sure "M Sport" doesn't change brakes, it changes things like exterior trim, steering wheel, and seats. I believe there is a 'track handling' package that would come with bigger brakes if you were looking to know what option came with larger brakes from the factory.

If you want to buy this from BMW, you want the "big brake kit" (like this https://www.bimmerworld.com/BMW-M-Pe...t-F22-F3X.html)

A lot of people who already have 4 piston brembo on front go through some avenue just to upgrade the rear calipers, either by finding 2 piston brembos on a junkyard car or by splitting the big brake kit with someone else (give fronts to someone who has a single piston calipers all around)

If you search around you can find several threads on just upgrading rears.

Agree. I don't think "M Sport" change brakes

So you appear to have front 340x30 4-piston Brembo and rear 1-piston Bosch over 330x20 rotors. F80 brakes use the same calipers but not the same sized rotors.

I’ve done several F3x brake upgrades. Is your priority for a brake upgrade, looks or brake performance?

REAR BRAKE UPGRADE
If it’s brake performance, there is a relatively low cost solution. Your stock F340/R330 setup nose dives under heavy braking because of the weak rear calipers. Upgrade to the rear Brembo 2-piston calipers over 345x24 rotors. A used Blue pair typically costs $450-$550. The F340/R345 setup will squat very controllably under heavy braking, a big improvement!

To go with it, get StopTech full crossdrilled rear 345x24 rotors. See photo. BMW uses full crossdrilled on M3/M4 because they have best bite and are best in rain. Avoid noisy dimpled & slotted rotors. They are a BMW marketing gimmick. Little performance improvement and they are loud. If they were any good they would be on M3/M4, but they are obviously not!

IMO Hawk 5.0 are best street pads to go with them. Part numbers in photo. Swap out your rubber brake hoses for stainless steel at the same time. Gets rid of mushy brake pedal feel. Replace brake fluid every two years for safety.

FRONT BRAKE UPGRADE
There isn’t much performance between 340 and 370 brakes unless you track where the extra mass of the 370 rotors helps to stave off brake fade in repeated high speed braking. Otherwise the 340 & 370 caliper castings are slightly different, but share the exact same pistons, pads, clips and pins.

So if you desire the look of the larger front rotor, follow the same methodology. Used front 370 calipers are typically $500-$600 per pair. It’s extremely important to check the raised lettering on the back which should say “370/380”. The smaller 340 calipers that you already have say “340”. Doesn’t matter if they are blue. 340’s come in grey or blue.

Same recommendations for the front brakes whether you go with 370 or stick with 340’s, including full crossdrilled rotors, Hawk 5.0 pads and stainless steel lines.

FRONT ROTOR UPGRADE
Full floating, full crossdrilled rotors are an upgrade over regular full crossdrilled rotors. They save about 3lbs each in rotating inertial mass per wheel and have replacement wear rings that cost less. I felt a huge improvement when mine were installed.

I used to recommend StopTech’s version but they’ve practically doubled in price to over $2k per pair. Paragon Brakes make high quality replacement full floating 370x30 and 340x30 front rotors. The website shows them in slotted for tracking. But they can be ordered in full crossdrilled and with a geomet rustproof coating. See link and photo.

Hope this helps!

I'd say buy the M Performance BBK from getbmwparts.com It's a great value and you have three colors to chose from. I've had mine in Austin yellow for 3 years.

The BBK is great but it’s hardly the economic choice, especially if just going for appearances. I’d vote to pick up rear calipers and paint them yourself. You’ll save nearly $2000.

Well the incremental cost gets better if you do them when you need a brake service anyway vs when everything has plenty of pad/rotor left.
