Car&Driver: iDrive 8.5 is comming this summer

Wild that the G42 will likely have 3 different iDrive versions so fast. The better looking but lower tech 7, then the 8 odd child, now 8.5 (eventually) which has open source Android on it (yay!).

The question is when will they bring it to the G42. My guess would be the 2025 model along with a LCI.

iDrive 8.5 is still Linux based

iDrive 9 will be Android based

Can anyone clear all the confusion around a possible OTA( or otherwise) upgrade for current models with the large display idrive 8. There’s a lot of contradictory information going around

It seems pretty clear to me that the G42 will not get the 8.5 update. We will stick with iDrive 8. I've seen a lot of articles talking about it, and not once has the 2 series been mentioned as a candidate for 8.5.

Sounds like iDrive 8.5 is just a reskined iDrive 8 to make it look like iDrive 9.

Are we gonna be able to upgrade to 8.5 for G87 MY23? I remember reading something about the new system needed faster chips.
