I’m about to pick up a new to me M2CS which has 3 year old sport cup 2 tires on it with 2500km on them. They seem to be in ok shape but should I be getting new tires just based on their age and the likelihood they were sitting ? If I do replace, is it worth it to get a cup 2 again or have people been switching to a ps4s ? Car will be 99% street and not ton of mileage each year

Tires that have been in use for five (5) years or more should be carefully inspected periodically for external signs of aging. While this inspection will confirm the condition of the exterior rubber, it cannot assess internal degradation or damage.

I would replace them with the ps4s tires simply because those cup2s are junk.

I would not be worried about replacing them due to age for a few more years. My personal experience between the PS4S and the cup 2 tires:

PS4S is a great road tire, I understand why folk gush over them. They have impressive grip, are quite, very comfortable ride, and last a long time(especially for the grip level). However they have soft side walls and turn in compared to the Cup2 feels mushy and somewhat unresponsive.

The Cup2 on the other hand are more noisy(not much worse than Pilot SS after a few thousand miles though), much more expensive, last about 1/3 the mileage with my driving, tons of grip once wormed up, offer a harsher ride vs the ps4s, turn in is fantastic and wakes the steering up quite a bit. They also tend to kick up a lot of rocks.

If I were going to keep my car, honestly I would get a different tire all together looking for a happy medium. If it was my only car and a DD I would get the PS4s no questions. For my use case I preferred the drive/feel of the Cup2… subjective, and depends on what you will use the car for.

Hope this helps

Edit: Forgot to mention, Cup2 suck in the rain, and PS4S are great… doesn’t rain where I live so moot point for me. Cup2 get some hate, but I really enjoyed them, though not quite worth the price difference.

It’s a weekend and fun car. I think I’ll run the cup 2’s and when they expire try a ps4s. Any other brands you recommend? I’ve heard that pirelli has some good products but all I hear these days is Michelin

For a week end car the Cup2 feel much more lively VS PS4S. For me, looking for a responsive tire, good grip but not the top priority my next purchase would be Yokohama V601. I haven’t tried these yet, but look forward to it.

Immense number of good tires out there I recommend checking out the tire rack comparisons. I run the Goodyear Supercar 3. More track oriented tire, but not as many tradeoffs as the Cup 2. Yokohama and Falken as well as Bridgestone all have great ultra high performance tires.

The Cup2 is a thinly disguised TRACK tire, so if you're not using the car for the track, pick up a set of PS4S and be much happier with everything except ultimate grip and turn-in.

The CUP2 Connects are a bit more street friendly than standard CUP2 tires. They have a 240 treadwear rating vs 180 for other CUP2. My car came with PSS, but I switched to the CUP2 Connects and I've been happy with them. I don't really DD my CS, but running these tires on the street has not been as dreadful as the standard Cup2 tires I had on some of my previous cars. Unless you do a lot of driving in the rain, the steering feel and quickness of the Cup2 is superior to PS4S.

The Cup 2 Connect 240 was the development tyre for the car. It’s not a dedicated track tyre it’s a UHP street tyre. People are always confusing them with the Cup 2 180 which is an entirely different tyre. Michelin sort of stuffed up with the branding on this. If you live in a decent climate it’s a no-brainer. I’ve got nearly 10000km on mine and there’s plenty of tread left. The only time they have felt slippery was on a very cold day (< 10°C) with heavy rain. But that hardly ever happens where I live and I don’t drive like an idiot in those conditions anyway so it’s a fairly moot point. Otherwise they are absolutely wonderful.

None star spec PS4S (they don’t make star spec in CS sizes) is a comfort biased tyre, smooth ride, good grip, but not really a drivers tyre as you lose steering feel. A good all rounder though. You will note BMW have their own spec on the PS4S for the G8x and it is nothing like the off the rack PS4S which tells you enough of what you need to know.

The old star spec PSS is more a driver’s choice as it gives more fun. That was the development tyre for the M2C. Not in the same league as Cup 2 though for feel or grip.

Cup2 240 TW are great. I would not change them.

I will probably need new tires next summer, and I am leaning toward cup2 since the PSS have no ability to hold traction in 1st gear (DCT). Here is my concern: my neighborhood streets got treated with chipseal, which is EVIL! For those lucky enough to live where this is not done, they essentially coat the street with hot tar and then dump rock chips on it, wait a week and sweep off the excess. It is great for winter traction, but the excess “chips” never get fully removed so sticky tires will pick them up. Has anyone with cup2’s experienced roads like this and how bad was it?

anybody tried sizing up 1 size on the width to get a more 'square' sidewall look vs the 'stretch' look from the factory SS

If I don’t use a Cup2’s, I will probably get pilot sport 4S, not super sport, and will definitely do this. I run PS4S 255/275 wdth on my 1M and the sidewalls still are not quite square. They look great, and the increased diameter will actually make the speedometer 100% accurate.
