Of course, different hardware requirements. No different from my early version of ID7 compared to later version of ID7...can't be upgraded due to different hardware requirements. Nothing new. I seriously doubt this is unique to bmw.

Funny how peeps always want the latest and greatest...I love my ID7, not so much my wife's ID8

they should just let Apple work on iDrive OS. At least Apple has a good track record... even my extremely old spare phone, the first-gen iPhone SE, managed to get more than 5 years of updates. It was on iOS 9 when unboxed in 2016.... got regular updates... even updated to iOS 15 last year(2021). That's 7 generations of iOS on a 6-year-old phone, which still works great for most everyday things.

I see many BMW driver keep their cars/suvs for 7 to 10 years, or more... will iDrive still be usable 10 years after original vehicle delivery?

Well, if you have the latest version then it’s more likely that you will have support and upgrades for more time.

keeping the original text here... because BMWBlog is like a 10-year-old who keeps editing/changing their story...

"At the moment, there’s only one U.S. car planned to iDrive 9—the BMW X1. It gets a bit confusing because the current X1 still uses the older Linux-based head unit, so X1 models currently on the road won’t be able to get upgraded to iDrive 9. However, the new X1 will soon get a head unit upgrade, to a newer Android-based one, and that will allow it to run the all-new iDrive 9."

How long you planning to keep your X1?...more than 4 years, maybe 5?

As for continued support down the road...honestly I'm personally not bothered. The software is the last thing that draws me to a BMW or any vehicle for that matter.

Performance first, everything else is secondary.

probably shouldn't be saying this on a BMW forum... but if Apple does come out with their own Apple Car, I'm getting one and ditching all of my current/future cars(Mercedes, Lexus.. .and soon BMW) Of course, that's still a big "IF"....

Tim needs a new 500-foot yacht, so I'm just doing my part to contribute to the yacht fund, I guess?

Except you rely on BMW updating to software to fix glitches etc. Much lower likelihood of them sticking to updating an obselete platform.

When the bulk of X1s made over their lifetime will be the new hardware -- do you really want to be the 3 month production run of old hardware?

My wife's 2018 X1 was updated about 3 months before she sold it to address an issue with BMW assist an my 2020 x3mc (ID7) was recently updated to resolve some bulletin I can't recall at the moment.

So no, the likelyhood if BMW not updating is low. Even if you're planning on keeping the vehicle for many years (5+) your argument may be valid.

But few own their BMWs that long...so, updates are only meaningful to those who fear on missing out....

Good one, although unlikely your X1 will last that long, unless of course you're over 95
