What should I do here....

Hey guys, was hoping to get some advice on a little situation I'm facing..

I have a 2020 M4 Comp that someone is interested in buying for a pretty okay price and I also want to order an M2 but unsure if I should do one of the following:
A. Keep my M4 and hold out for the comp model and individual colors.
B. Sell my car, and order the new M2 then trade that in for an M2c individual when it comes out.
C. Sell my M4, hold the cash, and buy later when what I want comes out..

Which situation would I lose less money in (probably just selling and waiting)? Anyone have any better ideas than one of the above?

If those were my choices, I’d do B as long as I had a fun car to drive in the meantime or I didn’t care (travel, busy with work, suboptimal off-season weather for driving, etc). If I still wanted to drive something cool while waiting for the M2 to come in, I’d hold onto the M4 and sell closer to the G87 delivery. This is a hobby, and I prefer to prioritize having a good time while doing the best I can to manage the cost as a secondary goal.

It doesn’t sound like you are that impressed with the new M2 that you have to have it. In this case, I would do A. By far the most economical way and you will only make moves for the car you truly want vs making moves out of circumstance and losing money in the process.

This really depends on two factors: 1) How much money you are willing to throw away, and 2) how unconvinced you are of the M2 (over a Comp version)

Word is used car prices are softening. If I had a used car I wanted to sell and had a back up vehicle I'd sell the car right now.

I'd not order a new M2 then in a short time flip it for a M2c.

Rather I'd wait for the M2c.

Used cars are loosing about 1% per week. There's tradeoffs with each approach. You'd potentially loose the most money with A. C would be the safest but you'd need a lot of discipline not to pickup something else. B. Is a good spot in the middle. He could potentially fall in love with the non-comp and get there faster unless he wants xDrive or a few more ponies.

I am impressed, and I do have to have it, but the colors aren't doing it for me. My M4 is an individual Le Mans, my favorite color.. and the color that I want to order the M2 in..

If there is a comp in a 6 speed, then there would be no way I could keep the base and be happy.. But if a comp never comes out, I'd probably be fine with the base. I don't want to throw any away! I like recycling

I have 3 back up vehicles... well, technically 2 since one is for the wife (but she doesn't drive much).. And actually technically only 1 since one of those is a classic.. Basically my 2002 M5 would be my daily if I sold the M4 lol

That's kind of what I'm worried about.. My offer for the car is 72K- it's an individual 2020 comp exec 6 speed with very low miles currently- You think the depreciation on the M2 will be less than my M4?

Why sell the M4 at all? Is it just the "I gotta have the shiny new thing" syndrome? I suffered from this for decades before getting over it.

Not M4 specific, but because so many F87 people came to this forum to tell us how this car was going to cause their car value to sky rocket, but, here's F87's "sky rocketing."

10/10 DCT M2C - $51500

https://bringatrailer.com/listing/20...competiton-17/

10/20 manual M2C under 10K miles - $48500

https://bringatrailer.com/listing/20...competiton-19/

Much gnashing of teeth in the comments, but the market is doing something other than "sky rocketing".

Individuals always seem to believe that this will be the case, but whenever a new model replaces the existing model by nature that the previous generation’s value declines even more so. An LCI model typically has the same effect to a pre-LCI model.

Yep, when I sold cars when I was 20/21, geeze, 25 years ago or so, we used to call them "dinosaurs."

Is that term still used?

Any way, I see a few CS's being posted on Facebook too.

It's as if people see a sinking ship....,

Never heard anyone call a car a dinosaur unless it's an old, carbureted car. I've had friends jokingly call a BMW that's out of warranty 'ancient'. I've been lucky though, never had any major issue with any of my bimmers that have been out of warranty. ***Knock on wood

I get your point but they are not exactly giving them away at 50k, when over two years ago a brand new M2C was 60k. Not a surplus in value but that's an excellent depreciation curve for a BMW, when your typical 5 or 7 series loses like 50% of its original sticker price after three years (pre-pandemic).

Most of the folks here are naturally going to gravitate towards the shiny new model because that's how human nature works but I would not sleep on the previous generation M2, as both these models are pretty much neck and neck in overall performance, so if you really look at the big picture, it comes down to aesthetics and value per dollar.

2 simple reasons… carbon bucket seats and the s58…

Yes word is used car values are falling. Which is reason to sell a used and unnecessary car right now. It is worth as much now as it ever will be.

To me B is bad. While the OP sells his current car now, odds are he pays a premium for the M2. There are threads of prospective buyers looking for leads to dealers not charging ADM. And how long will he have to wait for an M2?

Then if he decides he wants the M2c he likely pays a premium for the MSc and takes a depreciation hit trading in the M2.

Gotcha. I remember learning it as the outgoing model when a new one is released. I remember being stuck with a bunch of early 90's "dinosaur" Rams when gen 2 came out.

Yep and I also get your point and I agree. There was certainly a peak (I cashed in on it) and now they seem to be tumbling pretty quick. People looking to cash in now missed the boat, I think.

Step B - Sell your car imo. Look at the prices of last gen M3/4 cars pre pandemic they were found in the 30k-40k range often. Now is the best time to sell as prices continue dropping. Same thing with my CT4 V Blackwing - they were being flipped and now the best price I’ve gotten so far was just a few thousand under msrp.

If you’ve decided you’re getting rid of the car I’d get rid of it sooner than later. That’s what I’m like 90% sure I’m doing to avoid any further significant depreciation losses. The other 10% of me says keep it until the m2 is here though as I might miss having a fun car to drive lol.

Another dimension I should add that’s influencing my decision… I’ve never bought a brand new car and I would like to get that done before I have kids. The M2 that I do buy new, I would want to keep that forever, as long as it’s a top spec. So a base M2 would really be temporary.. ahhhh…. Lol

Maybe not. Once you start to have kids, priorities typically change. That could mean you'd never get another shot at the M2 or it could mean you keep the M2 original while the kids are small and you can get away with it. I don't want to get too personal but it may be very hard to argue for replacing the M2 with another M2 once kids enter the picture.
