M4 Popularity..
Am i missing something or totally oblivious as to why it seems like not too many people order M4s or talk about M4s? Seems like majority of consumers and people on this site are mostly all about M3s... M4 is faster, and has a much less build time

The M4s are more common in real life. Anecdotally, but I've seen 10+ M4s, and 2 M3s. Enthusiast may prefer M3s though, since it's harder to find an manual or even a performance sedan.

I think m3 being a 4 door caters to a whole lot more people and scenarios. A coupe has always been more of weekend or 2nd car thing, and because it's an M car, the supply is limited but a and 4 door M3 supply gets bought out quicker than an m4 due to demand.

Not looking to start a hate thing because everyone likes their own thing, however I personally feel like BMW really didn't design it properly. A 2 door coupe should look even more badass than the 4 door and it lacks the hips and agressive stance a sports coupe should have.
The fact that the 4 door design looks more sporty makes no sense. I'll also add that there are some real amazing M4's that are out there however it seems like it takes a lot of aftermarket add ons to make it look the way it should look from the factory. |

M4, no offense, looks like a mustang from the side profile. That's, imo, why it's not as popular.

Want sporty but need 4 doors so M3 it is. Searched for over a year to decide and looked at everything.
Had E30 M3 poster as a kid too so I always wanted one… |

Take looks out of it (even though I’d give the edge to the M3 there)
Why wouldn’t you want the more practical car if there’s no meaningful difference? The only reason would be that the coupe is dramatically better looking, which isn’t the case and hasn’t been the case on any of these in recent memory. Hell I’d get the Touring if BMW would put a manual in it and sell it here. I have other cars that are less practical. This one I want to be practical (though I wanted the manual over the xdrive, which would’ve been more practical). Some form of that thought process is why I think the F80 and G80 have been more popular in sedan form.

BMW produces far fewer M3s than M4s. A consistent ratio I've seen at my local (large) dealership is a 1:3 or 1:4 ratio. Right now, for example, there are 3 M3s incoming from port, while there are 10 M4s coming in. This was just about the same when I took delivery in December '21.
So, the people who want M3s because of family etc. are fighting over far fewer allocations. Over the course of a year, these numbers add up. I have seen tons of M4s on the roads here relative to M3s. Even at enthusiast meets like ///M car day where we had all the G8X cars park together, it was a similar ratio - looking at my photos I see maybe 1 M3 to 5 M4s. Whether by design or not, M4s outnumber M3s vastly. Similar to observations others have made above. And well when you look at the sports car, super car, hyper car set, almost all of them are 2-door. The M3 is one of the rare anomalies in that bunch. For people who can't yet afford a Porsche as a third car, they're likely to be in the range of having kids that need seats in a daily driver. An M4 could cater to that, but practicality calls for the M3 (especially if the wife needs to remain happy). I think the only take away is that the difficulty in obtaining an M3 should be correctly correlated to relative lack of production, not necessarily an intrinsic indication of relative popularity.

Why because many people like me hate sedans and I don't need the extra room. 4 doors is great if you have kids. A sports car to me has 2 doors. I have zero interest in a 4 door car. So it was a M4 or a 911. |

My dealer told me the same thing. M3s are a lot more popular and sell quicker and for more
And when I go to Cars and Coffees and BMW meets and events, across a few Mid-Atlantic and northeastern states, M3s far outnumber M4s. I was just in NYC this past weekend, and came across 4 M3s driving around or parked, and not a single M4. And driving around the MD/DC/VA area, I rarely pass another M4 on the road, or see one parked. M3s are way more common. One reason why is that I think many who buy M3s drive them more often than those who own M4s, with M3s sometimes being one's "daily". M4s are rarely someone's "daily", it's often more of a weekend, fun car. And on dealer lots, it's often the M4 still sitting there waiting for a buyer. Over time, I think we're going to see a lot of low-mileage M4s in the open market for resale. As an M4 owner, I kind of like this phenomenon myself...because for most, seeing an M4, mine of which I drive all the time, is a rarity. So when I read in this thread that M4s are "more common in real life", I wonder where enthusiasts are living where they see more M4s than M3s. |

Lol so much insecurity with M3 owners determined to convince everyone the M3 looks better every time this type of thread pops up. Always see so much trash talk about M4s coming from M3 owners as opposed to vice versa.
We're all enthusiasts here. Both great products, great looking cars and essentially the same thing underneath. Not going to go looking for the exact data but according to some posts I've seen here, the two door variant M has always historically outsold the four-door variant, and the G8X cars seem to be no exception, meaning BMW probably will make more and sell more M4s this time around too. We won't know until we actually see final numbers obviously though - who knows, that trend might get flipped on its head. Keep in mind however that this forum only represents a tiny minority of actual G8X owners. As long as we're talking about personal preference, I went M4 because I've always been a coupe guy. Prefer the dimensions that give it more visual width.

The m4 looks better from the rear. It has more stylish taillights than the m3. The m3 looks more aggressive from the side profile due to the rear wheel arches and from the front, both cars look identical. Yes from the side profile, the m4 does have a shape that's reminiscent of a mustang but so what. The mustang is a well styled car imo. So long as it doesn't share the build quality, I have no qualms with it.
So it's a tie in my book as far as the looks go. The m3 is a better choice for those who only have one car that they want to use for everything. We all know that most m3 buyers won't end up utilizing the rear seats as much as they imagine. It's all about the theoretical potential than how the car will actually end up being used in practice. |
