Spark plug Change tips / DIY ?

Any one have any tips or a DIY write up? Looking at doing this and plugs seem to be buried under a ton of stuff.

Skinny 14mm deep socket. They are made specially for this. Also lots of patience. You have to be careful disassembling parts to remove the coils on both sides. Use a guide — I found one here but it was fairly basic.

I found a write up that I used that got me in there and think it was from this forum. I don’t have the link handy but used it last year.

I replaced all my plugs/coils and it wasn't that bad. I just wanted to add that I didn't do everything that was outlined in the guide such as draining coolant. I just unclipped and unbolted whatever was in the way. The coolant tanks I just pushed to the side once they were loose and all was good. The key is getting the right socket. Other than that it was pretty straight forward and didn't take long to do.

Yes it seemed quite daunting at first but after looking into doesn't seem that bad. Did you replace coils w OEM ?

I went with the Dinan coils and brisk plugs. Car seems to run the same so no idea if there was any performance gain.

Ya I wasn't asking for a Google link not that this one's seems to work anyway. Was more curious why you chose that route as I've never heard of them before. Nor does it seem they offer an option for bmw so which one did you go with. And again. Why?

Sorry your last question wasn't very clear and I took it as you just wanted to know what they were and the link worked for me so who knows.

I have always used brisk plugs and I guess it's just personal preference. There are a lot of articles that debate the benefits of silver spark plugs. They don't last as long as others but change plugs fairly often in any of my cars that aren't stock.

Interesting. No matter what I search on the bases of the picture you provided nothing comes up as a part number.

Edit: nvm just googled it. Although don't see them on their website still. Just 3rd party sites. Never heard of silver electrode before. Interesting and doesn't seem to be a bad price.

Surface gap plugs and silver plugs have been around for a long time. I have tried various specialty plugs over the years but never noticed any difference. I did research the brisk plugs and the company has been around for a long time in Australia and there are a few back to back type dyno tests online that show small power gains. I don’t plan to use them but might buy the Dinan coils when I change mine preventatively in another year or two when the car will be over 5 years old and have over 50k miles. I am running BM3 OTS Stage 2 for 93 with JB4 controlling meth and adding a further 5 psi and have no spark issues that show up on the data logs.

Ya I don't care too much for the performance gains but if they're cheaper than oem I am always game!just curious which ones since they don't show compatibility for any bmw but I know a spark plug is generally universal. Generally. But they do offer several different variations.

And 50k for coils seems aggressive. I would think 75k at the earliest. The oem Delphi coils bmw uses are very robust. And unless you've modified the ignition I don't see them failing prematurely.

Most did my wife's (formerly mine) piggybacked 50i with 75k only for piece of mind since I was changing plugs and didn't want to have to go in again and pull it all apart. Haha

Order factory plugs from FCPEuro. Then when you need them again return the old ones. Total cost for second and future sets = whatever return shipping is.

I personally don’t return used parts to FCP, but I understand some cheap people take advantage of the incredible warranty and even return their used oil and filters. I like good deals but causing good stores to lose money is not my goal. I did install stock style plugs but in a colder heat range.

They have a YouTube video promoting sending oil back. It is not a loop hole in the system, it is a process they advertise.

You go ahead, but that is beneath me. I have been buying parts from FCP for 20 years.
