1200 Mile Break In…Car was driven

Just dropped my car off for the 1200 break in service and the car was driven for 5 miles. Is driving the car normal for the break in service? 5 miles seems a lot. 2022 G80 M3 manual btw

Mine had something similar. I also had my summer wheels/tires put on during that time, and they said they had to drive it a bit to get the TPM to "reset" or some other non-answer.

I asked around here at the time and the responses varied from 0 to a few miles...so I guess it's fine.

I had mine done recently, and it had no additional miles added after drop off.

Last two times I've had the break-in service done it was not driven afterwards. I think 5 miles is probably a bit much, but there's not much you can do about it.

I thought I read they have to get it up to operating temperature. If you took it to Jiffy Lube that's one thing. I'm pretty sure the dealer has seen an M3/M4 before

It's why I wait for my BMW to be serviced. Coffee, covered patio with comfy couch, first morning appointment, watch the sun....and watch the service techs not drive my car.

Just dropped mine off.. had a friend at the dealer do it and it had no extra miles.

In my experience the best way to deal with this is ask up front.

Test drive was mandatory from my dealer as well. They wouldn't not do it.

Not when I did my brake-in service. I asked if I could be there to witness the whole process, and they were happy to let me. Once they were done with the engine oil/diff. oil change and resetting the car computer, I was given the keys and drove off.

Had I not witnessed the whole process and noticed 5 miles, I would be asking questions at a minimum and expecting a logical/legitimate answer.

Unless you're changing oil on the dark side of the moon, I don't think the engine needs to be at operating temp. Besides, driving it to the stall would make it warm enough, I would think.

Additional note:
As mentioned above, is better to let your SA know how anal you are and request to be with the tech if he needs to do any driving with your car. It's a BMW dealership, and I bet this is a normal request.

I'm sure they do…

My guess it's still nice to take out a brand new

Five Hundred Horsepower M3 for a test ride.

It's not a common car they have in the shop every day like a pedestrian 3 series.

If so, they can merely keep it idling.

I think that's normal. My service advisor told me for the break-in service they typically drive 3-5 miles, and then contacted me later on saying that they put a little less than 2 miles.

Also..how close is the service vs the drop off location? Some dealerships have the garage, car wash, body shop, extra service bays and or the dealership at a different site.

5 miles isn't far but it's still 4 miles more than I would like... Ive been to some places they do drive everything a few miles to confirm issues have been resolved and was on a one-way lap around road which added a mile lol.

They may have driven it to let the car get to temp and check the oil level.

You could call BMW FS and pursue a credit on your account...you have a lot of options here.

Are you serious, credit for 5 miles? They'll just refer to their normal procedures for break-in service (which is to drive the car for X amount of miles) and close the ticket.

I just went and checked my receipt to see what was on mine. 1165/ blank They didn't do an out mileage. Just showed 1165 going in. I honestly don't care if they put a few miles on the car. I would rather not drive off, and have to come back for something missed.
