How many miles past the 1,200 mark?

Will be going on a family trip to expedite the break in to 1200 mile mark but may go over by roughly 150-200 miles. Any anecdotal experience with warranty being denied for going over? My research, albeit several years old, shows 1,500 mile is where BMW draws the line, but not sure if this is true.

100-200 over is ok. Should try to get it done before 1500.

I bought mine on Tuesday and then drove it to New Mexico from Texas in two days ran up 1100 miles and then did breakin service on Friday. All last week. Now the M4 just sits in the garage. Got one small rock chip on the hood.

Dumb question but why not try to get the break in service done before the road trip? That way you can have "fun" DURING the road trip?

Not sure what your mileage is now but maybe go for a bunch of aimless drives now until then, then get the service done?

Did you get that in writing? I've read that even extended warranty was denied due to being over 400 miles from break in. Sometimes dealerships can be heedless in what they say; "like drive it like you stole it" off the lot but then when an engine blows HQ denies claim.

I only have 700 miles currently and the trip is in a couple of days.

I'm at 800 miles, yesterday made appt for June 14th my estimated near-1200 miles. Dealer just contacted saying JULY 15th is first opening. I took it. Then emailed dealer asking the thread's question. Want it in writing. Then called and explained the situation and how the possibility of being flagged for warranty because the dealership couldn't fit me in for 45 days. Also let them know I emailed earlier to get it in writing.

I now have an appointment in 20 days.
Thanks to all for the help!

I did it at 1050… for this very reason. Nothing is gonna happen if you go a few hundred over. Don't worry.

I believe a dealer will do the break-in service as early as 900 miles.

I haven’t seen the figure for the most miles that won’t cause issue - I’ve been told there is a max. I haven’t seen proof. But my understanding is that going beyond the max, whatever that is, can void warranty, extended service contract, and eligibility for the car to ever be certified. Seems like if true, that should be in huge, multicolored text at the front of the owner’s manual though.

1499 is supposedly the max, over 1500 is bad. There was a post on here a while back of a guy that got it done at 1800 and was having warranty issues. Not sure what happened with that.

Every M car owned, I've used the long drives home to rack up the miles towards break-in service. (Varying engine speed, of course)

Rock chips are signs it's being driven as intended!
