S.E. PA RWD vs. AWD
Hi all,
Anyone here from S.E. PA driving a RWD and wish they had ordered xDrive instead? My build was moved to a MY23 so I will have to redo my order come July. I was debating whether or not xDrive is worth the extra cost since we really don't get a lot of snow. I had xDrive on my M340i and only got stuck driving in the snow once in the almost 3 years I had the car (granted I was working from home most of that time due to Covid but in the past if the weather was bad, I would just work from home anyway). Wife and I also have an AWD SUV so I can always drive that if I do need to go out in the snow. Just want to hear anyone else's experience with it in this area. |

xDrive might help with resale if that's a concern to you. I wouldn't worry about it much in this market, but in a couple years many of the people looking for RWD are really going to be the ones looking for manuals.... and the masses would be after AWD so they could play with every ford and dodge they come across in straight line nonsense.

Xdrive in an M car is not for snow/bad weather driving. Sure it helps but the primary intent is better performance and not just at stop lights.

If you are getting xdrive for driving in snow, don't lower your car and get a set of at least all season tires for winter time

For me, its not stop light hero but is acceleration from a dig. There is lots of stop and go with our road designs. Also, while it doesnt snow a lot, roads are constantly wet. Even this week, weather was nice but think there was drizzle almost every day at one point. Happened yesterday and definitely raining today. I dont want a 500hp daily driverthat i drive slower than other cars half the time. I realize the G80 is supposed to have much improved traction so maybe it wont be that bad. Yet, I feel the same way about my search for a pickup truck. I wouldnt be driving like the G80 but I prefer the grip so it must have an AWD mode.
I am not sure about the comment of manual preferred with RWD. While makes sense and my last M3 was manual (which became mainly a garage queen), that may only apply to the small % of purists. Driving manual is a dying art. Fewer and fewer generations will learn to drive manual. I learned on my Dad’s 3 on the tree chevy pick up. Even if my kids were older and had my F80, I wouldnt be teaching them on it. They should make manuals mandatory just so kids struggle with texting and driving. Ending rant.
