Oil temp
I've started monitoring my oil temp more, and it seems like my car could be getting hotter than i would expect. I'm just driving on street, and i'm seeing the gauge over the 1/4 hash mark.
Whats the temp you guys are seeing on your M2 CS when its fully warm and driven enthusiastic on street? |

I'll need to check. Haven't looked at it. I'm trying to blow it up while under warranty.

Trying to remember the exact numbers, and it changes a bit with which mode you are in. But over the 1/4 mark is just getting warmed up. 170 or so is what I recall being nominal. Really doesn't seem to move from that even in hard track use.

Typical is 208*F-220*F (ish) depending on mode, etc. At least according to the indication on steering wheel. Obviously fully warmed up.
On track it can get a bit higher but not much. |

That's super interesting as I'm pretty darn sure the dash indicator never shows over 200. I'll have to watch closer!

I had monitored mine the other day on my LED steering wheel .
Water temperature 104°C Oil temperature is 108°C Outside air temperature is around 18°C After normal 30 minutes highway & city drive in sport mode, in sport plus when the extra cooler start working the water temperature drop to 85°C in 5 minutes oil temperature is just under 100°C. Both water & oil temperature is higher than m2 competition in same condition. |

On the ZOP subject, i can confirm that i tend to be above the quarter mark for sure and more towards the middle when you drive aggressively. |

Just this morning I asked our resident oil expert edycol about this.
In doing research when I first bought the car I found that 185° was the magic number where I could give the car a bit of stick, but that ultimately I needed to wait until 200° to really drive it hard. edycol confirmed that it really should get to 180° before full attack. I plan to keep the car for a long time, so I'm still sticking to the 200°. I don't have a CS...yet, but the same will hold true. |

As mentioned earlier in this thread, note your throttle mode will directly impact the engine's oil temp. There's over a 10 degree difference with efficient mode coming in close to 10 degrees higher than sports plus.

This is why I love this forum. I had no idea the oil temps differ based on what mode your in.

I feel like comfort and sport are very close, oil temp goes up at about the same rate, sport + takes more time obviously so I never kick it into sport + until its already up to temp

An interesting post from an earlier forum post for the S55 in the F80.
I wish I could find my old videos of this in action from my oled mpe steering wheel. It was beautiful to watch this in action on your digital readout. I fell in love with M cars when I appreciated what kind of cooling was required to do this in seconds. |

Much of this comes from balancing efficiency with performance. Higher temps thin the oil making the engine slightly more efficient. Lower temps through better cooling provide better protection but less efficient for higher performance driving.
I avoid Sport Plus until engine oil is to at least 180*F. Also I have not seen an oil temp difference between Comfort and Sport. Didn’t pay attention to coolant but will on my next drive. |

One last thing, once the 60-90 second transition to target engine throttle oil and water temps concluded - the temps stayed on their mark regardless of sustained engine load. For me, this cooling performance was one of the distinguishing features between a M car built for track work and a M Performance variant. |
