Motul 5w30 opinion

Hey all, I’m trying to figure out if it would be better to run Motul x-cess 5w30 vs the 0w30 bmw brand oil.

I’ve run Motul in everything from my huracan to Ducati’s and a supercharged jetski.

I just don’t know what the s58 requires other then the run of the mill bmw 0w.

This is the oil Motul recommends for the S58 - LL-01 FE: https://www.motul.com/us/en-US/produ...ll-01-fe-5w-30

I'd use that over the other one while covered by warranty.

This oil is right on border of LL01. Under warranty, yes I would go this.
After warranty I personally would go Motul X-CESS 5W40 GEN2 or Pennzoil Platinum Euro 5W40.

Why jump up to a 5W40 over the usual 5W30 for LL-01? Because the former will shear down to the ladder and the latter will shear down to something too 'light'?

All BMW (and other European approvals) are based on ACEA and ACEA is based on High/Temperature-High Shear (HTHS) not grade.
Grade is irrelevant here, HTHS is what matters. You have my posts in M2 maintenance section, F80 maintenance section so you can check.
LL01 and LL04 are HTHS min 3.5cp, regardless of grade. Shearing of one oil compared to another depend on base stocks. Yes 5W40 should shear faster BUT only if all things equal (base stocks, polymers etc.).
Also, LL01 5W40 is not that much thicker than LL01 5W30. Those are very heavy 5W30 oils (usually around 12cst) and light 5W40 oils (usually 12.8-1.5cst in some cheaper oils like Liqui Moly, 14cst).
HTHS is what I would be looking here. Both Motul and Pennzoil I mentioned have HTHS of 3.8 but are actually light 5W40 oils indicating very sophisticated base stocks (which they have).

Thanks for the reply.

Using Motul’s oil selector and choosing a 2022 m3 xdrive the suggested oil is MOTUL SPECIFIC LL-12 FE 0W-30

LL-12 is primarily for diesel engines, but I suppose the oil can work with both. I wouldn't use that oil selector result since the oil doesn't look as good as the others with its lower HSTS.

In the oil selector, pick "BMW (USA)" instead of "BMW (EU)"

There is no diesel oil.
Oils are separated to Full SAPS, Mid SAPS and Low SAPS.
Generally, all BMW's since 2009 in Europe are running on Mid-Low SAPS oil which are LL04(HTHS min. 3.5cP) or LL12 and now LL17FE.
In the US we used LL01 (min. 3.5cP) and LL01 FE (min. 3cP) which are Full SAPS oils due to high sulfur in gasoline. But that is non issue since 01/2017.
SAPS is main culprit behind clogging DPF's and polluting EGR. That is why diesels always use Mid to Low SAPS oils. Also those oils leave less deposits on intake valves.
These oils were not a problem to use in diesels as diesel was low on sulfur in US since 2009.
If vehicle comes with GPF, low SAPS oils must be used. While warranty is going I would use whatever BMW recommends. After that, LL04.

I am always asking the same question . Why should we think about losing warranty because of using another oil ? Ask your dealer if they've ever sent oil to the labs in case of engine failures . Even though they will send it , they can't determine the brand or type. Very good oils for these cars are :
-Ravenol RUP 5w40 (check German forums)
-Motul 300V Competition (5w30/40)
-Redline 5w30

If they want, they can easily determine whether oil is what they want you to use or not.
Motul 300V is not appropriate oil for regular use. Any racing specific oil is that, racing specific oil.
