Can somebody please explain to me how BMW is setting sales records with Spartanburg..

up 20% in SUVs and 48% in PHEVs and yet we’re told there are no cars to sell and you’ll be paying MSRP++? Or is it simply a case of a big corporation taking advantage of a loyal customer base?

I believe most of the comparisons were versus last year. Which was a Covid year as well.

Also consider that Spartanburg makes the SUVs for pretty much all BMW markets except maybe China. Uptick in vehicle demand post-COVID isn't a US only reality...

Don’t follow: are you saying a surplus of cars being shipped to other markets explains the shortage here?

Not exactly. I am saying that the output from Spartanburg can be increasing while still not being enough to meet demand here and other markets. As you have higher demand across the board. And that the plant isn’t only serving the US market (unlike the China plants which do only serve China).

Very interesting insights. I was reading up on numbers from Audi, Mercedes-Benz, and BMW and noticed how BMW saw a swift uptick in sales. @Logical you make a good point. I think the numbers are in comparison to the previous pandemic year but because of higher demand as more comfortability occurs, there will be increased production but not optimal production as a result of shortages.

What is interesting is that BMW saw their best year ever while already had almost a 5% year-over-year decrease and Mercedes barely broke even. I don't know what this has to do with strategy, innovation, new customer onboarding, all of the above, or none of the above.
