Noticed some oil on my drive, coming from the the gearbox/transfer box area of my 335d. Booked in to Cooper BMW and it turns out I have a leaky transfer box. A £3000 bill very kindly sorted by BMW goodwill. just had to pay a little towards labour cost. Phew. all sorted.
very grateful to them and Cooper Norwich.

This is perhaps one of the main reasons it is worth paying BMW Stealers prices for scheduled servicing rather than using an Independent and saving £50 ?

Depends on the dealer. Very much hit and miss and some won't bend over backwards for the customer. A good independent specialist may have spotted that leak earlier and not such a big bill, but I don't know the ins and outs of a transfer box leak.

The repair bill may also have not been as steep if it needed replacing.

Independent specialist every day for me, but some like the dealership and BMW looking after their car for this reason. Some dealerships just don't care about loyalty IMO.

It good on BMW picking up the cost but remember the dealer gets paid for doing the work which would possibly go to another garage.

Definitely. I was told that it's favourable to have it maintained by BMW. I also have the BMW comprehensive warranty as well(pity it doesn't cover leaks) and that's another plus point for BMW goodwill.
What I was a bit peeved about was that I bought the car in August last year, they picked up a leaky transfer box on the AUC checks and put a new one in before handover. it's lasted16 months. hope this one lasts longer.

In which case, you shouldn't have had any contributions to make whatsoever.
The leak is a component failure. Not a simple leak.
In addition, even without a used car warranty, all parts supplied & fitted by BMW carry a 2 year warranty in their own right.
They've done you. You need to push for your contribution refunding.

Only parts fitted outside of standard or AUC warranty have a 2 year warranty on them. if parts are fitted in the given warranty period, they only have the remainder of the warranty that's left on the car. The leak was due to the casing. BMW insured warranty does not cover casings(unless damage caused by an internal compoment) or oil leaks. BMW policy. I will be bringing it up with them though.

Warranty or not. Major car components such as these are expected to last a reasonable time. The motor industry standard is 6 years. Your replacement isn't even 2 years old.

Transfer box issues are a growing common problem.

BMW as a reputable marque should be doing something about it not just wait for it to happen its like the clutch fiasco I had 2 changed on different cars but they did foot the complete bill.
