Can I turn off the crackle/pops/backfires on throttle lifts?

I test drove an M2C the other day and noticed it would crackle in sports/sports+ whenever lifting off the throttle. Every time for a few seconds.

I might be in the minority but I did not enjoy this. I think I'd like it if it happened occasionally but I could see it getting really annoying on every single lift. Just so predictable.

The car I was driving had M performance exhaust - does that exaggerate the effect at all? I'm guessing it might but the core 'problem' would remain even without the M exhausts, right?

I am 99% sure I will get this car but is there a way to make it not crackle, or at least not crackle as much without needing to take it off of sports mode?

Yes to every question.

Only way to get rid of it that I know is to get the car tuned and have exhaust overrun turned off.

Drive it in efficient. Sport/+ is for when you are in "the mood". I like efficient most of the time. More of a rush of turbo power when you need it and mild mannered otherwise.

Only way to have it off is drive in efficient mode. Doesn't the MPE have a remote that can adjust the settings also?

Only the OG M2 and not the M2C. M2C MPE works like the one on the F80/82, in that it's integrated into your individual settings (M) buttons.

You can remove most of it with a tune, but not all.

Yep a tune is the only way.

I did mine with BM3, burbles fully off in sport and adjusted down to a single POP in sport+

With a tune you can not only turn them off, but adjust the intensity, duration, rpm and speed limit of burbles in each mode...

I was riding with my mom recently and she asked me; "why does some BMWs makes that popping noise, like the muffler is leaking?" 🙁

I had to explain to her that it comes like that, from the factory and people actually like it :

I want a next-gen BMW but if it's going to sound like a 1988 Honda, with an off-key engine timing, then I prefer silence.

And it's only going to get worst; the pops and burbles much, much louder in the new M340i in Sport+ where it's actually borderline embarrassing to drive. #TrueStory

You must be, I certainly don't. It seems counter-productive, when I literally break every speed limit, from the time I back out my driveway and my ultimate goal is to stay under the radar.

If attention-seeking is your intention, then I guess I could see the appeal. Just know; you are confusing the public, not swooning them.

There is a place for the crackles and pops. But for regular driving, I prefer the option to turn it off via stock methods. I recall doing a test drive through town. Boy, it was obnoxious driving at 25mph and having the crackles going off. Got a lot of stares that just brought too much attention. Reminds me of cheap riced out cars that were lowered beyond belief. Maybe I'm getting older...

For me the issue in the test drive and YouTube videos I've seen is that:

1. It's predictable in that it happens every time you lift
2. It's predictable in that it sounds basically the same every time
3. It's too long and lasts ~3-4 seconds instead of ~1 second (though this one plays into #2 -- I think ~3-4 seconds could be cool if it happened only sometimes).

For those saying I can turn it off with a tune...that's just a software thing right? Does it affect warranty on the car at all?

Yes, it does potentially void your powertrain warranty, whenever you flash-tune your vehicle, regardless of the reason.

There is an increment number, which tuners refer to as a flash counter, which changes, anytime the factory software is altered, even from by franchise dealer.

I definitely don't drive my car to seek attention (if anything I want the complete opposite of that).

I usually drive on back roads where there's really no one on it so the crackle/pops are more just for my own amusement.

You seem like cool peoples, so I'm not judging, you do you.

Just saying, the pops and burbles are an acquired taste.

This is my first new M car, so it's still fun for me. (I came from driving whisper-quiet MB's.)

Personally, I still prefer NA, and would rather listen to this all day. This is the dream! ONE DAY.

Love me a NA also!

I'm partial to an E92 M3 exhaust note, that snarl just numbs my senses:

NA is just so much better! (The M3's sound on the second vid at 3:50 was especially nice!)

Yes, it's a software thing. Yes, it will void your warranty. There are some vendors that provide a factory matching warranty for their tune, but this gets expensive quick, and I think only one allows you the option to turn off the burbles (Carbahn IIRC).

Do some search in the engine sub forum on warranty and tunes. The issue has been beat to death there.
