Quick button to Carplay?
Is there a quick way to get in and out of Carplay? I only use it for music and the odd times maps, but every time I get in the car the iDrive screen defaults to Google or Apple maps through Carplay. Even if I try to use the quick buttons by the iDrive controller (Map for example) it just pulls up one of the map apps through Carplay.
I want to be able to use those short cuts for iDrive stuff not Carplay stuff. I know you can toggle to use iDrive for all functions or Carplay for all functions, but that is annoying when I want to jump in the car, have music through Carplay playing but also just have the iDrive maps displayed on the screen. Any way to get around this? Is there a quick way to use both functions (iDrive and Carplay) at the same time?

Highlight CarPlay in menu, press and hold desired number it will save. I have home address as 1, work as 2, Sirius 3 CarPlay 4, tire pressure 5, sport display 6. Mine will auto play music and show currently playing songs. Or will auto start on Sirius, depends what I last played in the car. |

If you press the home button on the center console it should take you to the iDrive home screen, from there Apple CarPlay should be in the top notification bar and you can click on that to get back in to it.

Yes it does do that. However, when I press the "map" or "nav" button that's beside the home button, I want it to take me to the iDrive map screen not to Carplay's Google maps or Apple maps. It's like those buttons are now shortcuts for Carplay as long as Carplay is running in the background (even if I'm not using any Carplay functions).

Here's a better question. How do you exit out of Carplay so that it's still running in the background and you can get to it whenever you want, but you are fully using all of the iDrive 7 functions?

I just press home. And or map. And it will display the bmw maps. I only get apple maps if I'm accessing maps through car play, and if I voice command navigation I use the "hey bmw" and it does it with bmw maps

That's what is strange, when I press the map button the Google maps through Carplay pops up. It used to go to the bwm maps so I don't know what changed. And when I press home, there is normally a little "map" widget, but now it just says in that widget box "carplay map guidance is active" something like that. I've double checked on my phone that none of the map apps are open and they are not.

I may have to. I have all the same as you above (11 Pro Max, latest update to ios and 11/2019 software). I haven't actually tried a hard reset of iDrive...could be as easy as that

Yes I double checked that all map apps were killed on my iPhone before getting into the car (I never have those apps open anyways - they are only used while using Carplay).

For me it looks like the google maps is not closing properly and somehow stays active in the phone's memory after the app is killed. The quick restart of the iPhone solves the problem. |

It's a bug. Not sure if it's in the iDrive code or the iOS code, but essentially iDrive still thinks iOS has control of the navigation function even though you've fully exited out of Google Maps or Waze. It happens to me at least once a week. So far the only way I've found to fix it is to disconnect/reconnect CarPlay, either by switching it off in iDrive, killing WiFi on your phone, or restarting your phone. Any of the above seem to work for me, but cycling WiFi off and on is the easiest.
I'm also on 07/2019 and iOS 13. I'm hoping 11/2019 fixes it, but obviously won't if the problem is within iOS. |

Awesome thanks guys! Did a hard reset of my iPhone and boom everything is working per usual now!
Still took the advise of mapping one of the radio memory buttons to Apple Carplay and that is amazing as well (basically a work around for BMW not including a quick way to get in and out of CarPlay). I mapped another button to my tire pressure but I can't think of anything else to go in the remaining 6 spots lol...for another post I suppose |
