Did anyone go from a 1M to their M2?
I'm thinking about this trade. I've had the 1M since new, and I'm just ready for something new with a warranty. I've read some online comparisons, and it seems like the 1M is a bit more raw and involving, but I'd love to hear from someone who actually owned and drove both of them for awhile, and if they have any regrets from making the change. I'm also thinking about the coming new Audi RS3.

Chris Harris drove them back to back on a track, too. Comparisons are not hard to find.

I did.
I sometimes miss my 1M. Easier accessible(lower speed) fun/steering/N54, but for the rest M2 To the OP: You WILL regret the RS3 or ANY Audi this side of an R8 V10 Plus... (If you're used to the most sporty M car from the last decade, 1M) Cheers Robin |

@1M Tex currently owns both. His wife owned a 135is 6MT and she upgraded to an LBB M2 6MT. Its her daily driver and while she loved her 135is... she does prefer the M2.
On the other hand, he prefers his 1M and continues to drive it daily. The 1M with mods is quicker, more raw and more fun. josephvman you wrote ... "I'm just ready for something new with a WARRANTY". You didn't indicate your driving usage, but if the statement above is driving your decision and the car is going to be a daily driver ( but not a track car ) I would say that you likely might be happier with the M2 ala Robin_NL because of the warranty and the M2 controls are easier ( read: less driver feedback) because of the electric steering , slicker shifter and lighter clutch with auto rev match (or perhaps you want an automatic ), better TPMS and other creature comforts like an IPad on the dash , Apple car play, etc. If your car is a weekend car, or a car that you track often, or if you are simply an old school car guy , I would urge you to keep the 1M... My car is a combo garage and track queen. I don't drive my car often. After weeks of driving my X1 ... The first thing that happens pulling out of the garage in the 1M.. I think - " wow this steering wheel is kinda hard to turn ... " and then I realize I can FEEL the wheel turning as well as it's being alive under my hands as it rotates back on center after a turn I can feel and enjoy the feel and effort of clutch engagement... i can feel the gear lever snick into gears and I can feel the tranmission cogs. I appreciate the Lower seating position and my oh so perfect manual seat adjustment and I absolutely enjoy rev matching myself ! The 1M is more raw and far more involving than the M2 when it comes to being an active driver. There is more tactile feel while driving. When i tackle tough twisties in the 1M it's exhilarating as hell and also tiring ! You get a bit of a work out and have a huge grin on your face and a little sweat under the collar. It's thrilling ! It's not an easy car to drive fast .. and it requires a talented driver whereas the M2 on the other hand is almost like child's play. It's like chess vs checkers. Both are great games but one requires more of the person playing. The Interior Dimensions of the vehicles are the same. The exterior of the M2 is longer and I believe slightly wider - may make a difference in some garages. The larger dimensions are actually a negative for an autocrosser trying to get through a course. For track drivers , the 1M can accommodate a far larger range of wheels and tires. The 1M does have some stock camber adjustment up front where the M2 does not. Realistically, both cars will need camber plates when tracked often. The M2 can only wear an apex EC-7.. and not the Apex Arc-8 for example due to brake clearance issues. The 1M can easily fit an 18x 10 setup all around and one can put wider tires on the front and rear than the M2.. running 18x 11 rears with 335 tread is possible. There are more brake pad options for the 1M as well. For my purposes, the only advantage of an M2 is a new warranty .. and european delivery again although that might be just perfect for you. |

I have a 1M and bought my M2 back in May of 2016. At first I though I would sell the 1M since the cars would be too similar.
As good as the M2 is, I like the 1M better, more visceral and exciting to drive and most of all hydraulic vs electric steering makes such a difference. The M2 has better IDrive, easier to drive fast, etc. see my videos below. This is one of my first videos so the quality is not good, (old camera) but you will see the differences. part 1 Part 2 Part 3

I made the switch. Both average 500 mi per month. Agree 1M is more raw & agile, but happy with the M2 feel & response in sport mode. Also feel overall look of body & interior is an upgrade. And having a warranty plus PCD was icing on the cake.

From what I can understand there is no reason to go from the 1M except the fact that you get a modern car with warranty updated interior etc. The M2 is slightly faster but the feel is much better in the 1M. I've been asking myself this same question and i think i will put my money elsewhere.

I kept my 1M, I ordered my M2 and wont sell either till I had plenty of time behind the wheel. I suspect you should do the same.
I also kept my 335D (which is better than both when running as it has 425lbs of torque...and is amazing...when running - thank you BMW for selling crappy diesels in the US) I kept a handful of others...and prefer balanced cars over pure speed. Only problem is, going fast on windy roads is a PITA as I always seem to catch up to Ben, Biffy, Marsha, Jane and others ho insist that 35 in a 40 is fine. So then I ask, maybe a 0-60 car is more fun as exploiting M cars is about high speed back roads...but they seem few and far between. I find myself then grabbing the keys from my wife and tooling around in her Porsche TurboS PDK just to rip off the line...and hell yes, storm to 90 for a blast here and there (90 in a 30 is 3x the fun) - and hauling down on the Ceramics takes no time. Porsche - reminds me there really is no Substitute. |

The standard M2 brakes are better then the 1M...if you are planning to fit aftermarket brakes this is not relevant...
I have driven both and I could have bought a used 1M, used e90 M3, used f80 M3 and a new M2. I went for a new M2, because I personally liked it more then the 1M and M3... The M2 is my daily driver and I have also a Z4M roadster in my garage for old school NA and hydraulic steering fun The M2 is a better daily driver (that also looks better inside and out for me), the 1M is better extra fun car that gives you more chills and thrills then the M2. But for that purpose I have my Z4M.
