BMW dash cam

So today after another near miss,I phoned my local dealer up about a price for a BMW dash cam fitted,so he comes back with a price of £220 for the front cam.I asked wether they did a rear cam and they did it was another £10,even he thought that can't be right so he doubled checked and yes if you by both its only £10 more.Has anyone any experience with the BMW dash cams?.

Asked about them before I bought a nextbase one but they had no idea what it was or how it worked so didn't bother.

The front camera isn't the most attractive as it looks like a 1980's Kodak camera whereas the rear is a lot more modern looking and can't be seen behind privacy glass so fairly stealth. The quality is pretty decent, the only downside I find is when it's parked it records on events so someone passing either camera will trigger, but this is limited to around 6 hours to avoid battery drain.

Interestingly enough I got a quote today for front only. Fully fitted was £395; so sounds like you got a bargain!

My worries are i) the front camera may dominate the windscreeen and ii) car is PCP so may need to check it's OK going back with camera. Guy said it would be about £120 to take it back out!

Still undecided, interested to hear other views.

Just had a quick look at the Advanced Eye Camera BMW offer - £400 or thereabouts sounds expensive IMO.
There are many options available - if you are willing to DIY, you can have a very stealthy 2 camera setup for circa £180

I have front and rear fitted in my 335d, and m135. Both fitted by myself. It's a peice of cake really.

Found my original post from when I fitted it to 335d

http://f30.bimmerpost.com/forums/sho....php?t=1315766

I was lucky, and got the first camera for £130, its currently around £180

The BMW Advanced eye can be bought from certain main dealers for £190 for the kit front and back

Fitting would be extra but I would use a good auto electrician so total for both fitted would be £320 ish

After fitting my basic Blackvue I would certainly do it myself again.

You can get a good Blackvue with 2ch for a few hundred and they are very discreet with the front camera been nice and neat enough to tuck behind the rear view mirror

With current technology, i'm surprised BMW don't do a system that integrates with the various interior-mirror cameras or replaces this with an HD one, that can record onto the cars HDD, can utilise the infotainment screen & export files via USB interface. Now that would be good!

Apparently the Citroen C3 has one built in. About time BMW did this.

They would then lose any sales to Austria.

That is assuming dash cams are still illegal there.

As mentioned on another thread, it would also restrict access to a number of restricted facilities.

A few places I go ban all cameras and recording devices.

I have recently heard a few sobering tales about dash cams actually being used by other drivers insurance companies to prove guilt. So while they are handy if some idiot hits you, they are also available to prove your own fault in accidents.

I think that goes without saying/obvious, you'd be a idiot to submit something that incriminates yourself or shows speed (if you were speeding) - this depends if you think you were not in the wrong but actually were.

Totally agree.... If an 'incident' was my fault I certainly wouldn't be offering the footage, the Blackvue I use also has a very fast a straightforward method for erasing the memory card. Also speed display disabled

The submission wasn't voluntary. My partner had a minor bump and the insurance company asked if the other car had a visible camera. The incident was our fault as we hit the back of him, however when we explained he braked without warning my insurance company said they had the ability to request the footage from any camera fitted in any involved vehicle.

Im not sure if this is the case, and im sure you could wipe any footage quickly if needed. It was just the insinuation that they had some power to get the footage

Yeah, Im pretty sure they could request the footage, doesn't mean they'd get it and if it was incriminating I can guarantee they wouldn't be getting footage from my dashcam..... If any footage was submitted to support a claim then of course any insurance companies involved would have a right to view the content.

Quick update on the BMW dashcam. Local dealer called back to say they could do front camera for £365 rather than the previously quoted £395.

Still feel it's overpriced for what it is.

Was out today and made an impulse buy. The Nextbase 512G front camera was reduced to £144 and decided to give it a try. Spent 10 minutes trying it out tonight. It seems simple to use and the camera seems good quality. I will "hide" the cables tomorrow. Seems like an easy job as in 2 minutes, I was able to push cable into headliner.

Initial views are that I am quite happy with it and that price, i can afford it to be a mistake and give it to wife for her birthday....I know.....I spoil her!

I know it still could be a tad early, but how are you getting on with the camera in terms of quality etc? I'm thinking about one of these myself.
