M2 as daily driver on rough roads
Someone on the 2 series forums mentioned this when comparing 240 to M2. I'm interested to hear opinions. To me it seems like any road/pothole that would fuck up an M2 would also do damage to an M240. But I could be wrong.
Anyone who can comment on driving the M2 through poor quality roads? |

It's a bit stiffer than the Mx35i, but not significantly and can deal with the poor quality East Anglia roads of the UK.
My wife and I only have one car - the M2 - so it does DD duties whatever the road or weather. It copes just fine. |

I don't recommend it, 19" wheel on none run flat with thinner tyre walls than m3, imagine the hassle when tyre get burst or punctuated.
That's on top of the tough ride you will experience on a daily basis.

Could replace the 19s with 18s (more sidewall) for a more compliant ride if the roads in your area are too rough...
Have any M2 owners fitted the 18s from the F8x? Edit: found it - http://f87.bimmerpost.com/forums/sho....php?t=1218617

It does bother me just a little that this car doesn't have a spare tire of any kind. I foresee a tow truck in my future.

Why does the Michelin Pilot SuperSport on the M3 with 275x35x19 (rear) and 255x35x19 (front) have a thinner tyre wall than the 265x35x19 (rear) and 245x35x19 (front) on the M2?

Because of the tyre width being 10mm narrower, which translates to a 10*35%=3.5mm thickness difference. Mind you - m2 doesn't have the adjustable dampening, making it noticeably a rougher ride than m3.
Personally my butt even hurts with a floaty f30 on a 19" wheel on bad road. Of course how bad is bad enough is to each its own.

On poor quality roads it feels more harsh than my ex 1M on oem tyres/wheels. Even on our rather perfect highways overhere I'm amazed by the bumpiness/almost nervous reactions when driving faster than lets say 90mph. I'm not kidding. The 1M was worse in that way, but hey this is a more modern/bigger 2016 car.
The car surely is fast enough(270kmh on speedometer) but from 200/220kmh(125-140mph ) on the flat highway the ride isn't very convincing and relaxed I must say. The rearsuspension is (way) too hard imho. It's sportier than any car in the bends this side of let's say a Cayman GT4 but the concessions you have to make is the ride. Cheers Robin |

Ah, got it. I thought you'd meant the thickness of the rubber from the inside of the tyre to the outside world! Fair point, the amount of rubber between the wheel rim and the road is slightly less on the M2. I suspect the benefit if you hit a pothole is marginal, but it will help a little.

None of you drove an STI, Evo or Civic Type-R (EP3, none of this FN2 shite) for a DD in the past, did you!?!?
The M2 is a cosseting ride by comparison! |

I've had better luck with potholes in my old 1M and now M2 than my wife in her 5 series with run flats. Run flats suck, the side walls are so stiff that if to hit a pothole you tear your tire and bend your wheel. We have switched from fUn flats on her car.

My statement simply was to point out the problem when OP has the none run flat PSS burst or punctuated, which is expected sooner or later on the bad quality road.

I live in New Brunswick which has some legendarily bad roads, and have found the M2 to be quite compliant. Compared to my old Z4MC, this thing feels like it's riding on an air cussion haha
All in all, not bad performance and it can handle potholes well, but tires beware. |

I just drove through some Colorado mountains on dirt roads in my M2. Handled it pretty well. Definitely stiff and super bumpy, but it's doable.

Everyone's butt dyno is different; 100 people, 100 tastes. Go and test drive one. It's the best way to learn about the car... Obviously.
I don't know where this hearsay about the (lack of) comfort of the M2 is coming from. I drive on the shittiest roads ever and I can say that the M2 is totally fine. A bit stiffer than an F20/22 M135i with adaptive. In worst case scenario, install 18" wheels.

I like in the M235 how I can ride "harsh" when in the sport mode but if I want a softer, "Toyota Corolla" type ride I can go to comfort mode. That's mostly not for me, but when I drive my girlfriend around, the harsh ride in sport mode of the M235 almost made her sick. |
