M235i Xdrive Or M2
I live in Edmonton, Canada currently drive my 135i year round, I am thinking about upgrading to the M235 xdrive, my opinion a better car for the Canadian customer if you plan on driving year round. Now the question is get the 235 xdrive now or wait for the M2? a couple sites are saying the M2 could come with an xdrive option. Anyone else here about the M2 having xdrive? I don’t see them having a M2 xdrive option, if they did I would buy one in a second!!

Being a fellow Canadian, I understand the appeal of xDrive in our harsh winters. Now personally I find RWD and winter tire combo is good enough, given it's my personal setup right now. Facts are however, that a XDrive car will be better than RWD. How much better and whether or not that difference between the two is worth it is totally up to you. If you've grown accustom to your 135i's RWD dynamics in winter, a M2 should be no problem for you (it'll actually be better due to the added LSD). However if you need the AWD traction, the M2 will not be for you.
M2 pros: -better driving dynamics -better track performances -will look more attractive (subjective) -more fun M235i XDrive pros: -greater safety and capability in winter -probably better fuel consumption -lower cost to purchase as well as cost to maintain -available right now (vs. a wait time for M2) |

If you can wait that long for the M2 (with a winter tire setup) and the extra cost is not a concern....M2

What sites? I'd be really surprised if they did an M2 xdrive, but I'm just JAFO so who knows. Regardless, if you're having an easy time in the snow with your current ride then get the M2, if your 135 is causing you problems then get the xdrive. |

The M235i XDrive with the M performance exterior goodies is my ideal car.
The M2 will be a TRACK(circuit) monster! I think for a street-able, fun, DD, the 235XDrive will be the winner in my book. Off the line performance, 0-60, 5-60, will all be faster in the 235XDrive. My definition of fun for a street car, is a car that puts power down and doesn't burnout unintentionally. I think close to 380-400ft lbs of torque in a lightweight, RWD, will be quite a handful in DD situations, and especially on shitty roads! I want an auto transmission, coming from a DCT in my EVO X and having test driven an F80 DCT. I can say that I do not like DCT for DD because of the initial hesitation off the line. Which happens because the clutch disengages and engages in stop and go situations. The 8 speed auto does not do this. Most will probably hate this idea, but I would have picked up an F80 M3 and will probably have a deposit for an M2 if they offered a performance based XDrive option. Coming from WRX, STI, EVO, and a RWD overpowered 135i(FBO+E85.) I can honestly say I enjoyed the AWD cars in both wet and dry conditions more.

Well said and I agree which is my dilemma right now. I'm a huge M fan but also a realist because I live in a sort-of harsh climate a few months of the year. I thoroughly enjoy the capabilities of my AWD vehicles (and I've had many and/ or there's always at least one in the family) but I also enjoy the thrill of an M car and there's nothing better than an M car (or equivalent) on track. But tracking for me is only once a year nowadays and the question is...do I really need an M2 for this one or two day "gorging on speed and handling" event? Although I'm not thoroughly satisfied with the M235 RWD or AWD dynamics, I still love the car because it's fun IMO. Real world driving type of fun. And I'm sure it'd be fun 365 days of the year, including that one day at the track. I'm a Dinan fan so if they're willing to get off their asses and get their Shockware and spring set developed for the M235 xDrive (only their Dinantronics tune is available at the moment), I'll be a buyer sooner than later. Properly yet subtly modded might just be an ideal compromise between this type of 2er and it's super-2er brother coming next year.

IMO, you can drive a RWD vehicle in moderate snow as long as you have a lot of experience driving in the snow.
You'll just have to accept not driving when it's realllllly bad out. Otherwise it depends on how experienced you are. |

How about a M235xi with dinantronics tune? You'll get 364 hp, which is about what the M2 will make, and 430 lb-ft which is way more than the M2 will make. You'll have a matching warranty and xdrive to get all that power to the ground as well as deep snow driveability.

Wow, that's not bad for that much of a gain , do you know if anyone ever had problems with a jb4?
I know it voids the warranty but I don't think I've seen anyone complain about jb4?? |

Check out F30 post under N55 technical forum. There's tons of JB4 posts.

You can drive RWD in a lot of snow so long as you have the right tires and adjust your driving for the conditions. Common mistakes are thinking that an a/s tire is sufficient for winter and expecting to have the same braking and turning performance. The drivers simply do not compensate enough. The only days you could not take out a properly shod RWD would be the same days you should not drive at all. Those would be extreme snowfall (i.e. Buffalo last week) and ice.

If it's so bad that you physically can't drive RWD, then you probably shouldn't be driving at all. In most cases, any moderate snowfall can be driven in, as long as you are really careful. That's it. You have to be careful, drive really slow, and take the flat routes, not the ones through the hills (if possible). It all comes down to this. If it's so freaking bad out that you can't drive a RWD car, then you probably don't have to be going to where you want to go (i.e. closed office due to whether). |
