Keep in mind this is individual car models. BMW as a whole isn't super high up on the list of reliability in general. Tesla being on this list is no surprise. I'm actually surprised more of their models aren't on the list (although that may be due to not enough data points for the model S and model X). Tesla as a whole is second only to Lincoln as the most unreliable automaker according to Consumer Reports.

I always wonder if the Consumer Reports rankings provide an accurate picture since their sample size is restricted to their subscribers.

I am glad that they at a minimum weigh the severity of various issues and assign a score to make it more accurate. If I'm not mistaken, JD Powers rankings may be skewed since they look at "problems per vehicle", where a problem is either an infotainment software issue or a major mechanical issue. That is one of the reasons Lexus dropped several places on the JD Powers rankings due to their terrible infotainment software. But we all know the reality when it comes to their mechanical bits, it will go on forever.

Mercedes is inching closer and closer to rubbish.

The X/V167 launch was/is a flop. The 48V system across several platforms is a flop. The W223 S-Class is still in its early days, but the 48V system could be its 800 lb gorilla.

All MB V8s have fatal flaws that commonly occur at fewer than 100k miles.

One of the more recent 4 cylinder engines is developing a reputation for cracking pistons in fewer than 100k miles, a fatal flaw.

Hard to believe, really, that MB could be as bad as it is from a reliability point of view.

Re. mercedes, they re falling into the samsung/LG trap of adding too many doodads and not spending enough on engineering. Half the shit that comes in modern cars is utterly useless.

I think it's all we have to work with but when owners fill out their questions the answers can get skewed depending on their attachment to the brand. For example Subaru owners are almost cult-like and replacing engines and transmissions (nobody does this more than Subaru) to them is a mere formality that doesn't dampen their enthusiasm for the brand and may lead to them not being overly critical on their survey vs say an owner of a Mitsubishi that has no attachment and bought it because it was cheap so those rattles and unscheduled trip to the dealership is going to be something they are more critical about.

It's actually interesting if you compare this list to a list of "happiest" customers. Tesla is near the top of happiest customers while their reliability is near rock bottom... infiniti is near the bottom of happiness but pretty high up on reliability.

I'm not sure brand loyalty has much to do with reporting problems. I see many Tesla owners as excuse makers for why their cars are lacking in quality/reliability.

If I am not mistaken, CR rates both transmission problem and infotainment rebooting the same in their reliability tests since they don't have a weighting for type of issue faced. It's just quantity vs. quality...

Yeah. the Model 3 and Y should be the same. Takeaway is - luxury cars are less reliable, and their consumers love them anyway! We consider less reliable cars to be of higher 'quality' (i.e. Japanese vs. Germans). Perhaps, the lowest quality now, is good enough where it doesn't matter to the consumer to have 'more reliability'.

That's my understanding as well. So someone going in for a glitch in their infotainment and someone going in for catastrophic transmission failure would both report 1 problem each.

A good example of this was when the G05 initially came out, it had a lot of iDrive glitches and thus was rated very poorly in reliability by CR despite most of those glitches being relatively minor. A year and a few software updates later the glitches were mostly ironed out and the reliability rating improved drastically.

Here are some comments from AlexOnAutos about this topic. I thought it was a good perspective.

"Here's Consumer Report's latest auto brand reliability ranking. Most of this shouldn't be a surprise, but as always I encourage you to really dig into what the numbers mean and what they don't mean. Sound off below!

First up, they score from 0 to 100 and average is a score of 50, but Consumer Reports won't say what 100 and 0 really mean. How much more reliable is a 100 in the Lexus score than an 87 for Acura? Who knows.

But perhaps the most important thing is that their survey is based on just about 300,000 cars, significantly less than in prior years. 10 years ago CR was pulling in over 1.2 million responses which was a much better sample of the automotive world. Also, domestic brands are very poorly represented in this data set. Data is good for Toyota, Honda, Lexus, but mediocre for the Koreans, spotty for the European brands and practically non existent for the Americans. Brands missing from this list had too little data for them to speculate with but even the ones they did cover have massive gaps in the years and vehicles covered.

True Delta is not even close to having a sample size to 300,000 cars.

Is there any other survey that has more than CR?

Of course it depends on how SPECIFIC of an answer you are looking for but for all general intents and purposes, CR To me is accurate.

As much as I love my BMW, I know for a fact it's not close to reliability to a Lexus. Even my friends who work for BMW agree.

If you love your Bimmer, MB, or whatever it is, why bother disputing what CR says.
