Looking to buy this car, need advise~!

Hey guys, I'm interested in buying this M3. I have driven it and it is in great shape. a beautiful car. my only thing is that it has 97k miles. I don't know how that would handle on a BMW. Please advise on how smart of a buy it would be.

This M3? Where? lol

But seriously, any BMW with that many miles is going to have high maintenance costs.

What year? Thats alot of miles for any performance car. Imports are worse because of parts/maintenance.

oh I thought he was talking about the E9X model... I was going to say where the heck was that person driving and what would make him think that a new model car that only came out in 08 should be anywhere near 97k. But for a 02 I guess that isn't all bad.

reasonable miles for an 02, but I wouldn't pay $19k for it. More like $12k-$14k

Can the current owner get you a copy of the service history and if they have done any service themselves provide receipts for verification. These cars can get very expensive if not taken care of properly. If the car has an excellent service history then I see no problem getting the car except for future repairs parts may become hard to pass by.

I don't think anyone could find an 02 e46 for 12-13 anywhere. 19k isn't bad. my payment on it would be 300 a month wit taxes with 5k down. I'm also switching from an 07 335i with procede :-[

come on guys! give me some real advise....my lease on my 335 was over two weeks ago and i've been carless! should I go for the m3? is it going to be a cash cow with maintence? or will it be alrite?

i'm either getting an 11 benz c300 sport, this m3, an 07 Q7 or an 05 cayenne. what shall I do?

Why is there a M5 badge by the throttle response button??

and the car looks a just a little modded. I would never buy a modded car unless i knew its org. owner and what was done to it IMO

I would pass, love ///M cars but at 97,000 its going to cost you mucho dinero when things start going. No way I would pay 20k for that, especially with it being a vert, meaning more potential problems.

Just IMHO.

Cheers,

While it looks clean I'd pass too. In addition to the ever increasing likelihood of expensive, out of warranty repairs others have noted, you're stepping into 9 year old technology (with the 2011s out now). No Nav, SMG vs DCT, etc. Go with one of your other options would be my two cents worth of advice.

- argh you should not be thinking this way, even if you can afford it, you dont' want to overpay. how many dealers/pvt sellers have you checked prices with? If it's less than 5, then keep trying. I was shopping my price for 1 whole month before I bought my car.

look man, if you're really trying to find a base maintenace cost, then you need to calculate the costs of each scheduled cash outflow for it.

So at 97k you need to know when the next trans/diff/brake/engine-fluid and tires changes are due and how many payments you will make for these given the timeframe of how long you want to keep the car and your average annual mileage. Then calculate whether you're going to do it yourself, go to 3rd party shop, or do it at BMW. And you should arrive at your expected maintenance cost, assuming nothing is wrong with the car. Next you can add expected fix cost if something is wrong with parts x,y,z within your time frame (go to e46 site and ask all the 90k+ milers what has gone wrong). Finally, sum of all these costs is a figure you have to be comfortable with in addition to your monthly payment for the car.

It's not rocket science here, just write down this time and mileage schedule and assign a dollar value to each task and sum it up, and if this is too much work for you to do, then I don't know what else to say.

I wouldn't touch that with a 10 foot pole. As great as my E46 was, at 65,000 miles problems started to come out of everywhere. I spent 5 dimes in repairs in the last 3 months I owned it. I guess as a secondary car, for $20k it would be nice to have as the E46 was a great car. But if it's as a DD, take the $20k and get yourself a Nissan Altima. Can't go wrong with that.
