They've been using this convention for the last 30+ years. As a BMW customer, I'd be more confused if I started seeing 85 or 100 after the model.

The names do not add or subtract from the performance metrics or battery capability on launch date. That's what really matters. It's best to redirect collective energy towards understanding what i4 has to offer vs other models.

Product planners are entitled to change their minds.

Tesla doesn't use kWh in their model names anymore. They have Standard Range Plus, Long Range, Performance, Plaid and Plaid+. And then you have the Cybertruck thing which has Single Motor RWD, Dual Motor AWD and Tri Motor AWD.

There's really no comparison. The Model 3 is fast sure, but it feels like an appliance.

EVs are great appliances for the masses, but as a car enthusiast I'm not convinced.
LOL, the TM3 is MEANT for the masses... As "exciting" as a Toyota og Golf.

Try a Jag i-Pace or even the BMW i3 and you most likely will get hooked on BEVs.

it is partly for that reason why I will forever keep my 440xi GC unicorn, hide it in a barn somewhere, and let my grandkids do the Red Barchetta thing.

I'm convinced that BMW AG has someone on the payroll monitoring this forum 24/7 as the googled link was at 1st a 404 error and now this:

There's really no comparison. The Model 3 is fast sure, but it feels like an appliance. No noise, no vibrations, no gear selector, barren interior. A totally sterile experience. The Macan S on the other hand makes great noises, has tight steering with sufficient road feel, and a proper shifter.

EVs are great appliances for the masses, but as a car enthusiast I'm not convinced.
Macan S is much more expensive than a Model 3. We have a Model Y at home and agree that it's a completely different driving experience. My wife for one loves the Model Y. I like the clean interior styling. Reminds me of the original iPhone compared to the smartphones from Nokia at the time.

We used to have a Cayenne S that my wife traded in for her MY and I doubt she is ever going back to a non EV. So different markets and buyers...I am seriously considering my next to be a well optioned iX.

Yeah. We drove the iPace, e-tron and Model Y. I loved the i-pace, but wife went with MY as the safe bet. Yeah, once you have an EV it is addicting for sure.

Hopefully i4M50 has some bulging fenders and looking more aggressive. Current i4 based on the pictures is too " meh".

If any model were to receive those design cues/features, it would be the i4M, not the M-Performance model.

I'm surprised they're not doing an i4 xDrive40 out of the gate. I would expect that to eventually be the volume model, similar to the 330i xDrive today (and 430i GC xDrive soon).

The names don't mean much until we get more details about the battery and motor output. I suspect the two M models (M50, M60) will have similar total power with the battery capacity being the main differentiator.
Having a non x-drive will be beneficial for the range maybe that is why the a 40 edrive is the base model?

And probably it will have the longest range if all models have the 80 kWh battery.

I don't know if x drive is really necessary with modern traction controle and electronics if you don't live in a cold climate or in the mountains.

Unfortunately for us in the UK, in 9 years time (2030) we will have no choice, as our gov't announced a ban on all new ICE engines.

There is a 5 years extension for hybrid, but I believe that is only plug-in style powertrains (I.e. it doesn't cover mild hybrids with integrated starter/generators like the M340i).

So while I agree synthetic fuels are very interesting, we won't get the chance to see in the UK if the gov't follows through and implements its announcement - which is looking very likely.

So as the production names have revealed here today, I googled "i4 eDrive40" an found this page:
Two comments:

1. Great job!
2. Never ever offer direct links. Never explain how you found it. Moreover, obfuscate the discovery in a way that makes it difficult to find independently.

I learned this lesson way back in 2013 when I just started on this path and was happy to share my methods - and then quickly found I had to invent new methods because the old ones would suddenly stop working.

Absolutely, RWD models have a place in the lineup. But that doesn’t mean they have to limit AWD to the performance model.

Based on BMW’s current product lineup, there is huge demand for AWD. AWD is available (or standard) with every engine in every single sedan and SUV they sell in the US. The same is true for some of their competitors. When it comes to premium vehicles, it’s usually not about what is necessary; it’s about what customers desire.

That front end looks almost like the M3/4 front. Like they share the same design.

I can see, that if you look at the source code for the website, the 2 numbers refer to the prices:

vehicle-model-code-71AW
BMW i4 eDRIVE40 Basis Drive

vehicle-model-price-71AW
65000.01 (this is German site, so I assume EUR 65.000)

vehicle-model-code-31AW
BMW i4 M50

vehicle-model-price-31AW
70000.01 (this is German site, so I assume EUR 70.000)
