M2 CS transmission: do you prefer manual or M-DCT ?
Back in 2015 I posted a poll "M2 transmission: do you prefer manual or M-DCT ?" (see here).
No-one had driven or even seen IRL the base M2 at that time. Results (725 votes):
The future will tell whether this new kid on the ///M block lives up to its high expectations. Based on what I know so far, I trust that the M2 CS is bound to become a very desirable BMW M car, a quintessential automotive gem setting a new beemer bliss benchmark: a properly sized, fast & powerful rear-wheel drive 4-seater with great driving dynamics, fine-tuned reliable 3.0 6-cyl powerhouse, cool design & presence, decent boot space, creature comforts and available with manual gear stick & M-DCT. You can comfortably drive your partner + two kids to the circuit, lap the circuit and all return home again with a smile, including a stop to pick up groceries. Quite practical and versatile/multipurpose. Moreover, the M2 CS will also be one of the last models before BMW and BMW M fully implement the new 'design language' of big front end grilles. Very likely the last generation at the gates of the future era of 'grillefication', electrification, more front-wheel drive & all-wheel drive, more automatic/ZF transmission, less 6-cylinder & exhaust drama and further tightened regulations. And, hence, IMHO the M2 CS stands a good chance to be reputed as 'vintage'/'classic' in the future (so-called 'future classic'), a pinnacle car tech toy with still an 'analog' twist (instead of going fully digital) facilitating emotional connection. But it risks to be a challenge to get hold of an allocation (build slot) (2200 cars worldwide, all built in 2020), features a peculiar Bavarian blue launch color and an immodest price-tag for a BMW 2er. Unlike the E46 M3 CSL (SMGII), E92 M3 GTS, E90 M3 CRT, E92 DTM Champion Edition (Spengler), F82 M4 GTS, F82 DTM Champion Edition (Wittmann), F82 M4 CS, F80 M3 CS and F82 Heritage Edition, manual transmission will be available as standard feature on the M2 CS. BMW M boss Flash confirmed last Summer - in a general way about BMW M cars - that currently no plans exist to discontinue the manual gearbox (see for example here). However, almost certainly we won't see the M-DCT on the next generation M2 (G87). The M-DCT is on its way out. Therefore this poll question: imagine that you could order an M2 CS (450hp - 550Nm - no armrest):

A manual M2 with a S55 motor and Adaptive Suspension.. What's there not to like.
I wish I had a Golden Ticket to get me one but I know the demand is going to push the "Market Adjustment" into the stratosphere, making the prices unattainable to us mere mortals. So it will be just a poster car. |

Fast doesn't always equal fun. But fun feels fast.

Although I have historically always chosen and preferred a manual transmission, I decided to vote DCT due to lower highway RPM and thereby lower cabin noise and fuel comsumption when cruising long distance.

Manual all the way for me.
I've been wanting this car since I got my original M4 back in 2016. I had a short test drive in an OG M2 DCT in the fall of 2017, could already tell it was a playful chassis. Then some seat time behind an M-Performance edition OG M2 manual on track was wicked awesome, by far the most fun car that day really sealed it for me. I did a short test drive of an M2C manual shortly there after and the extra power brought the car really alive. I currently have an M3CS with DCT, so I have the ultimate M3 with the last of the DCTs and I'll have the ultimate M2 with a manual. Can't go wrong there. |

Too much traffic in Seattle. DCT all the way. Also doesn’t hurt that a DCT is faster with better gas mileage.

Artemis, as I noticed you recently started to refer to M2 as a 4-seater. Although it's very true, no one actually pointed it out, or clearly saw it. People want to believe it's a 2+2.
Is it in some way a response to the opinon (of some, including me) or the "RANT" that M2 is way too chubby for a coupe and almost is a hatchback.

Prefer DCT due to my commute. This would be a daily driver (wild right) . I do work from home 3 days but there is bumper to bumper traffic I need to deal with.
Also , wife will not touch the manual and we need the convenience of her being able to at least move the car / drive it for whatever reason. |

While I'd be tempted to get the DCT just because it's being discontinued, I think far into the future the manual will be the one to have. Automatic transmissions are bound to get better and better in the future making the DCT a novelty but not necessarily better performing than new tech.

Manual for sure! Since the focus is analog, I see no better choice. If you look at great sports cars in the past. People always come back to the manual versions, regardless of 0-60. Honestly, 0-60 does not really matter in my eye since cars are ridiculously quick nowadays. And when BMW goes, electric, it will be even faster.

Manual all the way. If you’re a driver you like heal-and-toe downshifts, even if it’s slower. Pulling a lever is never that rewarding of an experience.

Although I do have an OG M2 6MT I would choose the DCT now.
-DCT is disappearing in favor of the ZF 8 speed -IMHO the clutch (feel) is a major let down on the OG M2 |

I consider the M2 CS backseats and extended boot space when you fully fold these down (60/40), a practical benefit on a high performance car. Not only to share driving fun with kids, but also to transport stuff to a track or on longer trips. A benefit that won't feature on for example the 718 GT4, which is only 5mm (yes, merely 0.5cm) shorter than the M2 CS.
