SMG is an autimated manual with a clutch driven by hydraulics. Shifts are pretty quick with it.

never driven a car with SMG, but most comments say its pretty fast, much closer to manual than step., and it's pretty FAST!!!
but still misses the excitement and feeling of the manual...

for me, i would take it

If it doesn't have a clutch pedal, it's an automatic. Automotive technology, SMG, DSG, etc., is just killing the art of driving.
I love AT's if my sole objective is to drive from point A to point B, but fun and excitement for me can only be had with a MT.

i kinda agree with u...

but with DSG, guys chose suto not just to make it from point A to B, they also take it cuz its faster than MT...

and i heard SMG is pretty quick too...

Yeah, you're right. But even if the AT shifts faster then any human can possibly shift, the fun is removed. I would sacrifice speed for driving excitement anytime. Even if it shaves off half a sec on the quarter mile.

If you have to ask, just get the freaking stick and save yourself $ for mod. Well, if you are looking at m3, you have a heavy wallet so you pro don't care about saving $.

While I agree with the statements that its not an auto and not a manual, it is closer to a manual than automatic.

I really dont get the argument of 'its a quicker change' in any transmission debate. 90% of us in here are not professional drivers, and it probably is quicker shifting in an auto. But you dont get the driving pleasure from the auto like you do in a manual...

I say drop the argument. Every person is going to prefer something different, so lets all enjoy what we have chosen...
