McDonnell F-4 Phantom II

A large anhedral angle (negative dihedral angle) of the horizontal tall in combination with a sharply defined positive dihedral in the outer wing panels are two conspicuous identifying features of' the aircraft. These two features are related to the position of the exhaust nozzles located only a short distance behind the low-mounted wing. To avoid impingement problems with the hot jet exhaust, the tail surfaces are mounted on an aft fuselage extension above the nozzles. As indicated by early wind-tunnel studies, the resultant high position of the horizontal tail in combination with the wing-shape parameters led to undesirable nonlinear pitching-moment characteristics at high angles of attack. The large anhedral angle, or droop, of the horizontal-tail surfaces greatly improved the pitching-moment characteristics, as well as increasing directional stability. To achieve the proper balance in dihedral effect for the integrated aircraft configuration, however, a large positive dihedral angle was incorporated in the outer panels of the wing. In addition, the wing dihedral elevated the wingtip vortexes relative to the horizontal tail and further improved the pitching-moment characteristics of the aircraft. Another identifying feature of the F-4 is the large vertical-ramp variable- geometry inlet located on each side of the fuselage. These inlets feed the two 17 900-pound-thrust afterburning General Electric turbojet engines.

Wow! All I read was that they had to bend the wings to get control of those two monster engines!
And that it was a Navy design, originally with no gun, only missles....

Fly-by

Another type of fly-by! Notice the down turned wingtips for flight control.

I love pelicans! I still have not gotten any good shots of them. I have to drive all the way out to Jenner or Bodega Bay to get a shot and I just have not gone out there in a while.

Both Lenny and Carl have settled in very nicely over the past few months They have each staked out and claimed their favorite nap spots throughout the new house. Carl likes hanging out at the bar too

Carl definitely made the right choice of spots! Good to hear they are both doing well, sometimes these moves are more difficult on the pets rather than the owners.

After eight years of owning this Boxster, it was finally due for a California smog check before my annual registration renewal was due.

How hard could it be - - - more than you think! I took it to a few local smog check stations and they all told me to go to the dealer since they have to expect the engine bay for modifications, even though all of the testing happens at the tail pipe. So I negotiated with one of them to do the check as long as I provide excess to the engine bay for a visual.

In the front trunk, you can see the padding and carpeting under the convertible top, the engine cover (with 12 T30 screws), speaker covers/mounts and a few other sorted bits. Not in the trunk but out of the photo are rear firewall padding and carpeting. The bare firewall is visible through the windshield.

The car passed and I got to put it all back to together again. On the plus side, I finally got to see my engine from the top instead of the bottom after eight years as a daily driver!
