VW Kills the Manual Transmission for the Golf R & GTI After 2024

Special-edition 2024 Volkswagen Golf GTI 380 celebrates the manual transmission in VW's hot hatch

Herndon, VA — Volkswagen of America announces the 2024 Golf GTI 380 today, a special equipment set standard on every 2024 manual-transmission GTI. Available exclusively in the North American market, this special-edition build combination celebrates the heritage of the manual transmission in VW’s hot hatches during the final year of three-pedal production for Golf GTI and Golf R.

“The GTI 380 conveys our appreciation for the enthusiasts who have continually demonstrated their love for the manual-equipped GTI for over four decades,” said Petar Danilovic, Senior Vice President of Product Marketing & Strategy for Volkswagen of America.

The “380” name comes from the Mk8’s internal model code. It’s a nod to the fourth-generation GTI 337 special edition, sold in 2002, which borrowed the internal model code from the Mk1 GTI.

In the same spirit, the GTI 380 incorporates design and performance-enhancing elements valued by VW enthusiasts and pairs them with an exclusive color to bring a truly special equipment set to every manual-transmission trim for 2024—S, SE and Autobahn. Enthusiasts will appreciate standard DCC® adaptive damping system and multi-spoke gloss black 19-inch aluminum-alloy wheels—from the Golf R 20th Anniversary Edition—shod with summer performance tires. A gloss black painted roof pairs with gloss black mirror caps, and stands out against the classic red exterior detailing of GTI. Colors for the 2024 Golf GTI include Deep Black Pearl, Atlantic Blue Metallic, Kings Red Metallic, Reflex Silver Metallic, Moonstone Gray, and Opal White Pearl, along with Graphite Gray Metallic, which is exclusive to the GTI 380.

Inside, the GTI 380 pays homage to the storied history of GTI with a golf-ball inspired manual shift knob—present on every generation of GTI—and honeycomb accents. S and SE trims feature classic Scalepaper Plaid cloth seats; Vienna leather seating surfaces come standard for the Autobahn trim and are optional on the SE trim. The

As with the rest of the 2024 Golf GTI lineup, GTI 380 trims are powered by a turbocharged EA888 2.0-liter four-cylinder engine with 241 horsepower and 273 pound-feet of torque. This model is the last Golf GTI to be offered with a 6-speed manual, while the 7-speed dual-clutch DSG® transmission will carry forward on future GTI models and on the Golf R.

The 2024 Volkswagen Golf GTI 380 goes on sale in early Fall 2023, with a starting MSRP of $32,485 for the GTI 380 S, $37,285 for the GTI 380 SE, and $40,625 for the GTI 380 Autobahn.

Why the 380 in the designation? Not like it has 380 PS/HP or TQ. Shame but it will be cheaper for VAG to make a single 8 or 10 speed for all the hot hatches in preparation for transition to 1 speed electric.

It's getting comical how many Ls VW has taken over the past few years. You could make the argument that VW was the coolest non-luxury automaker of the 2000s with highly unusual cars like VR6-powered Golfs/Jettas, W8-powered Passats, diesels available on basically everything (remember the V10 Touareg?), etc. Then dieselgate happened and out went all the cool stuff for completely soulless and mediocre crossovers, with the only holdouts about to be stuck with the wrong transmission for the rest of their existence. And the 380 name is dumb, nobody cares about some irrelevant internal model code that has never been used anywhere by any non-VW employee ever to refer to the car.

Their revenue is up almost 100 billion since dieselgate, so I don't think they care much, lol. That said, I do agree with your sentiment.

We now live in the world of absurd CAFE standards. The manual transmissions are one of the first victims. The future will be automatic transmissions that will have so many gears you will be in third by the time you get to the end of your drive way.

We live in a world where global automakers, all of them, now make vehicles to suit the needs of governments and not their customers. Innovation is all but non-existent, it's just a big follow the leader, copycat game (did customers ask for screens and elimination of buttons?).

For that reason, I believe there is some major pain for them in the future.

Lots of you forget that the MAJORITY of car buyers are NOT enthusiasts. They just want A to B that they think is amazing and can run around thinking they have the best car ever.

Us enthusiasts are the minority. We do not keep them in business. The non-performance variants keep them in business & the performance cars we love in production

What I said has nothing to do with enthusiasts. Even ordinary car buyers have a lot of choices. Most people care about what they drive and take car buying very seriously because it is a big purchase and a big part of their life. Very few of them asked for the “innovation” currently found in most cars. Trends start via one car maker doing something, and the rest follow. Screens, rear light bars, aggressive styling, etc. A plumber in Kansas doesn’t want an EV, in fact most of middle America doesn’t, yet that’s what every single automaker, with very few exception, is moving towards. Did the customer ask for that? Sure, maybe 5% did. Makes you wonder…

Car buyers asked for all the nannies & such in cars today. Obviously, not us enthusiasts, but the majority of the buying public wanted all these & the nonsense electronics that are making people lazier & lazier.

From what I've seen, most people walk onto a car lot knowing zero or damn close to it.

For the several thousand people who were glad VW offered a MT and for the eleven people who bought the car with one this is disappointing news.

Looks like the Mini Cooper will be the next to fall. Reportedly no manual will be available on the coming generation.

A rear wheel drive Mini Cooper is bad enough but a automatic transmission Mini Cooper is automotive sacrilege. Alec Issigonis is crying.

So true. I owned an MK7 Golf R with the DSG and the reality is that 90% of our provincial community were driving the automatics. The "Save the manual" people are extremely vocal but haven't put their money where their mouth is and if nobody buys them, then manufacturers aren't going to make them. Besides the VW manual transmission in those cars is even more of an afterthought than the BMW manual transmissions so nobody is really missing much.
