Dyno & Data Logging | Eventuri E46 M3 CF Intake

Dyno & Data Logging | Eventuri E46 M3 CF Intake

Since the advent of it's publicly announced prototyping, the Eventuri CF Intake for the E46 M3 surely created some buzz. The goal with the Eventuri CF Intake was to use some innovative engineering to produce an intake that actually made power, looked good, and sounded ferocious.

The Eventuri CF Intake utilizes a fully pre-preg carbon fiber air filter housing with an inverted style cone filter. The air filter housing and filter create a venturi-like effect that naturally draws in air seamlessly into the factory airbox. In addition to the intake itself, they have supplementary accessories to make it a complete system. They include two heat shields to safe guard away from radiating heat from the engine. One of the most effective portions of the system is the CF air scoop/air feed. It directs air from the driver side brake duct and straight into the intake. This helps capture high velocity high volume cold air! The engineers at Eventuri spent a lot of time perfecting the airflow with the aspiration that it would actually create tangible power, that most other branded cone filters and intakes don't.

We have spent a lot of time with the E46 M3 testing out different intakes and full carbon fiber airboxes. Once we finally got our own Eventuri CF Intake, we very excited to install and dyno test.

After initial install, we were pleasantly surprised that we could truly feel a difference on the top-end of the power band with the system. We installed the intake at the side of the track at Gingerman Raceway. The first session with the intake definitely showed that power was gained. Not only was a noticeable induction roar present from the front of the car, but you could feel the car real away from apexes at a much faster rate. Coming down straight aways, we found ourselves upshifting sooner as we gained pace.

Before going to the dyno, we went back to the stock intake and factory tune. The car was strapped down, baseline runs were taken. After that, we repeated the same test, minutes after with the Eventuri CF Intake.

This time around, we visited a new dyno shop in the area. Unfortunately, they didn't have a data logger for us to graph certain parameters along with our whp/wtq. We brought our SnapOn diagnostic tool to do our best in monitoring some parameters before each run was taken place to try and control all variables respectively.

With the stock intake, we found that it was rather challenging to control IATs at steady state prior to each each run. On average, we were looking at roughly 4-5ºF above ambient before the run was taken. By the time the run was complete, we were at least 10-12ºF above ambient.

With the Eventuri intake, controlling IATs were much easier which we think truly does attribute to the power/torque gains. Before each run began, we got the IATs to around the same 4-5ºF above ambient when cruising at a steady state in 4th gear. After the run was complete, IATs stayed fairly stagnant. The highest we ever saw was 6ºF above ambient. With the supplied heat shields and CF air feed by the driver side brake duct, we believe that IATs are managed much more controllably.

The results we got after swapping in the intake truly surprised us. We honestly were not expecting the gains we measured. The results are staggering. With the dyno shop not having the typical fan setup that we're used to, we think that our baseline results might have been on the lower side of things since the factory system was just having a tough time with temps. Due to the brilliant Eventuri setup, it's simply able to suck in cool air so much more efficiently. As many know, the ECU in the E46 M3 is very sensitive to IATs. If IATs are on the higher side and if air flow is minimal, the ECU will certainly try to pull ignition timing and run on the richer side, hampering power.

We do have plans to dyno back at our usual spot with a fan setup that we think we could better control IATs for both setups. Ultimately, we just want to provide accurate, precise, and repeatable results.

Overall, we are so pleased that we had the opportunity to finally provide the community with an independent test of the intake. We hope you enjoyed this quick review.

Dyno Data
Here are all of the stock runs we did. We typically try to do runs quickly back-to-back to test repeatability. Since we had a tougher time control temps with the stock intake, we did have to space these out by a handful of minutes.

Here are all of the Eventuri CF Intake runs we did. These three runs were literally done right after the other. In between runs, we needed just a few seconds to stabilize IATs and get to full throttle!

Here are all of the runs from the evening of dynoing.

Here are the best of each intake setup. We typically define "best" not as highest peak power/torque, but as which run has the most area under the curve. We feel that this typically depicts gains on more tangible level.

Ultimately, it was very rewarding to see a clear depiction of the gains we felt both on the track and street. For all candid purposes, we weren't expecting to measure this much of a jump in power. Eventuri typically estimates slightly less gains. Whether it be our tough time controlling IAT on the factory system which skews results or if it's our much bigger header/exhaust system which raises the gain potential, we're not entirely sure! None the less, we do plan on revisiting the dyno for further testing to provide a greater sample size of data results.

Stay tuned for another dyno test. This time, we will be on a 100% factory standard E46 M3 ECU to eliminate the CSL calibration as a variable. We will also be on a dyno that has full data log graphing capabilities. We'll see if we can still record a measurable and strong gain.
